Things to do in Chicago?

I'm thinking of stopping over in Chicago for a couple days when I come of to Phoenix for the forum in March. My only experience of Chicago was in the airport during a layover on the way back from Mexico when I was 11. I also happened to be very ill and spent most of the ten hour lay over nearly dead (no joke) on the floor of the airport. So, I thought as I will have the option of a free stopover in Chicago I might take the option to change that memory a bit.

So, what is top on the lists of things that can't be missed in Chicago?

I went to Chicago back in July and had a great time. Shopping downtown is a lot of fun. Navy Pier, Shedd Aquarium, Art museums, Grant Part, there was another park right next to it also. Lots of things to do downtown. I enjoyed it alot and hope to go back soon.

Go to the museum of science and history. It's one of the best museums in the world.

If you can schedule it - do a concert at the Aragon ballroom...it's impossible to describe...one of the best venues you can imagine to see a live show.

Don't ride the trains (use cabs) and avoid the Southside. Beverly Hills in Chicago is not like the place in LA - you're white...you'll at best be robbed and worst end up a statistic. If you're there on a Sunday, go to the Maxwell street market - it's on Canal & Roosevelt...a total bargain hunter's dream.

For food - check out Gibson's. It isn't cheap but the steaks are fucking fabulous. You gotta make reservations to get a seat - the number is (312) 266-8999. Another kick ass place is the Riva - it's not really so "uppity" and you get a great view of the city skyline.

As long as you stay downtown, you won't really have many problems and there's shitloads to do/see - just dont' venture outside of the loop. It's a fucking warzone in places.

There is so much to experience in Chicago, it?s difficult to know where to begin. You may want to start with an overview of the city. First, see the expanse of the Chicagoland area from 1,000 feet above at the John Hancock Observatory or the Sears Tower Skydeck. Next you can head over to Navy Pier to experience the Amazing Chicago Funhouse Maze, which takes you through a journey of Chicago landmarks and history. Also at Navy Pier, Time Escape is a 3-D motion simulation experience allowing you to travel through Chicago?s history, present and future. There are a variety of boat tours departing from Navy Pier and other city locations, as well as city bus tours, which point out significant landmarks and provide interesting information about Chicago and its history. See our tours section for more tour information and see our Navy Pier section for more exciting things to do while you?re there.

We took a boat tour through downtown and really enjoyed learning all about the buildings and everything like that. Damn just talking about Chicago makes me want to go back :) Staying downtown is pricey but well worth it.

I lived in or around chicago for 22 years... definately buy the "city pass" at the Art Institute... that will give you things to do for 2 days. Check out Water Tower Place (shopping) and the shops along the Magnificent mile outside of Water Tower.

gotta hit the hancock building, the field museum, walk along the water (if it's not too cold), millenium park, buckingham fountain for that Married with Children photo op, and the Belmont and Clark area is fun too. Milwaukee st has some good bars/pubs. Rush St has the clubs if you're up for that. Grab a room at the Sofitel Chicago Water Tower for the night. I've heard that the river architecture tour is great but we haven't had a chance to do that yet. And by all means, make sure you get some good deep dish while you're here!

we've never had any problems with the trains and regularly ride them in as we live out by OHare. Grab a day pass for $5 and jump on the blue line at OHare and ride it into the city.

if you do decide to swing by and want some more info, drop me a line!

The main offices of Playboy just happen to be in Chicago, I could make a few calls for a nickle tour. :winkwink:

I took a pic of their offices in New York ...perhaps I should add to my collection. That and I would popular with my travel companion.
