german webmasters what does your bank charge you for cashing in checks

i think i should really change my bank because they charge me 14euros for a 400 dollar check.

what do you pay

PatrickM 01-24-2006 06:47 AM

I also pay 14 when cashing checks at my main bank but it doesn't matter how many, it is still 14 euros.

A few years ago there was something at American Express Bank called "Waehrungszuwachskonto" where you could cash $ checks for free.

Don't know if this is still around though...

12.50EUR at Hypovereinsbank. But it's for up to 20 checks I think, so I always wait until I have multiples of 20 and then make that whore at the bank deposit them all at once!

jimthefiend 01-24-2006 08:45 AM

I am getting at least 5 per week, however most of them are in the 300-500range :(

FreeOnes 01-24-2006 09:13 AM

that are about the same prices as in the Netherlands
I have found much better ways during the years though :)

Antonio 01-24-2006 09:13 AM

I know you said German webmaster only but let me throw my 2c, get most of your payments by eppasporte, I think it's the cheapest option no matter where you live, they charge me something like $2.50 (stand to be corrected) for every ATM withdrawal which is pretty cheap

oh, and just to rub it in, I pay only about $5.00 per check ;)

Enlighten Us ;-)

I am really interested ... wires are quite expensive too, epassporte?

By the way do you use financial instruments to hedge the currency risk?

It starts at 19.95 Euro minimum, above that it's procentual.
Don't know if it is for each check, though.

alexg 01-28-2006 12:47 PM

One of them is open a US account.

You can simply hedge your currency risk these days. For example with the US$/Euro fixed deposit. Or with Turbos of ABN-AMRO Bank or Speeders of the Commerce Bank. However so far I have never used them. Predicting exchange rates is really impossible. You always do it wrong. Therefore you will be better of after 10 years without doing anything in my view. (Remember all the analysts whom said that the dollar would fall against the euro, instead it did raise 14% in 2005)

feN 01-30-2006 11:12 AM

I think it's like 15 euro at Sparkasse.. those fuckers..

If I cash more than one check at a time it's still 15 euro though

what do you pay

can you open a citibank account in germany? there's no fees with citibank for USD checks

BigPinPin 01-30-2006 11:48 AM

Bei unserer volksbank in Deutschland wurden auch ca. 15 Euros einbehalten. In der Schweiz waren es umgerechnet 9 Euro.
