The Term 'Niche-Slapped'

Who remembers what Internext that was from and what company came up with it first?

Spider Ninja 01-31-2006 08:06 PM

new to me

2002 and it was CE.

Search for "niche slap" in Google and you will find it.

I believe they used:
'Give Your Traffic A Niche Slap!'

Regardless it stuck and was very original at the time. I don't know how I would feel launching a marketing campaign off another company's slogan.

Next question:
What will you remember more, those huge hanging banners at Internext or this GFY skin?

Skin: Burned into my head.

I had not heard it before or seen it used by them anywhere until it was posted here yesterday... I talked to BigB today to see if it was true and yes they did use "Give Your Traffic A Niche Slap" in the past (not sure if they still have ads with it out). Either way mine goes "Niche Slap Your Traffic" and now that I know CE has already used something similiar I wont include in my future promotions.

I actually wasn't knocking it too much. I think what I'm trying to come up with here, in terms of ad dollars, is it better to spend x amount on a webmaster board branding or x amount at a show...

I actually remember a lot of programs from back in the day at shows that I do business with today. I think one of the differences is you may see faster return on a board, whereas with a show, it's realized over a longer period of time. Not sure which is worth more though...

how about all the foam boobs they've had flying around at the end of the last couple shows? brilliant viral marketing, i says! perhaps we can make it an annual event - the CECash foam boob fight - at the close of each show.

That's been going on for years. Foam boobs and foam rockets (Jupiter).

I remember IA2000 they did the same thing, it's like a show closing ritual, it's going to happen at most of the big ones as the show closes for the week.

Actually 2002...didn't the Sweets have foam grenades too and that obnoxious booth with camo and blaring music. Sometimes obnoxious is good :)

V

I also remember this...which is pure genius.

Roger V, walking around with hot ass girls, no booth. Pinning Pornkings pins onto people's shirts. Probrably cost him 50 bucks total, and I still send traffic to this day.

Some GFY skins I remember:

FreakBucks
ADS
Rage Cash
I Want U

First of all, no they're not. I'm also not saying there's anything wrong with recycling a slogan. I could care less. Bottom line is that slogan makes me think of CE. Yea it's recycled, but now the value of it doubles for CE because they did it in 2002. I've been meaning to hit Mike up about something, gonna do it tomorrow.

What it really made me think about was show floor branding and the difference in show floors from 2002 and 2006. You can say none of the big guys did anything this year...why, because it's not worth it to them anymore. They already did it. Did people talk about the floor in 2002? Yes. Did they in 2006, yes, about how much it sucked.

I remember the Platinum Bucks booth this year because I've known those guys for a long time and the Local Billing booth because I had meetings with those guys. Any other new companies didn't catch my eye. I wouldn't say it was AVN's fault, I'd say it was their own for not doing anything original. I'd seen it all before. To put up a booth and expect people walk by and automatically do business is stupid. They needed to do something original and none of them did it. Smash Bucks/OC3/$tyles did a good webcast now that I think about it...

My point here is that I think show money does work, because I still remember companies that went all out at shows, they're still around, and I still do biz with a lot of them. What doesn't work is setting up something like everyone else and hoping people stop by to check out a product like everyone elses. If show organizers ever want to make money on floor space again, they'll hire creative directors to consult with exhibitors to make the booths and the floor as a whole more original. They also won't charge for it because it's to their benefit.

FreakBucks should do well with this skin since they have an original product. I don't have traffic for them, but I'm sure that people who do will notice them. Some people may only remember the ugly colors, I'm a little colorblind so I don't see the huge deal.
