Bold Text's Impact On SE Rank
 

Hi, got a quick question hopefully you can answer.

I designed all the pages of my website before I knew very much about SEO. Almost all the text on my site is in bold. I have heard that having certain words in bold can help in seo, but having too much can actually hurt your se ranking. I was wondering how large of an effect this may have on a site's overall ranking in the engines.

My site has 70 to 80 pages that use bold lettering quite often. Is it worth going back and erasing the bold tags on each page, one by one?

I'd really appreciate your advice.

I can't answer your first question but I can address this one: "Is it worth going back and erasing the bold tags on each page, one by one?"

If you get a free text editor like Editpad, you can open up all your website files, search for the bold tags, and replace them with blanks all in one swift move.

overbolding = bad

sprinkling in <strong> = good

Download www.webceo.com - its free software and it will analyse your pages and tell you what you should do.

It will help with meta tags and other stuff too.

<strong> tags should only be used to help the spiders find individual keywords IMHO

Another thing I forgot to mention is that when I don't bold the text, it doesnt look as nice as when it is bolded. Is there any way to get a bold effect on my text that won't affect me seo-wise? Cuz it really doesn't look good at all.

what about <b> vs <strong>?

Try arial black font.

What do you mean by "individual keywords" ? As I know there is no difference between strong and b tags, but strong is recommended by w3.org as the standard for bolding the text. Or better, in XHTML, where is CSS era dominating, font-weight:bold is in my opinion the most appropriate for using.

Actually, as far as I know, all SEs like bold text. Bolding keywords can help in getting better ranked for those keywords, but all that is just relevant and depends on many other factors...
