just picked up this thing from my buddy that got hired at google, he said that it was one of his signing bonuses.

ive not been able to find the motherboard or ram online, but im sure someone here might be able to... im trying to figure out how much the mb and ram is worth.
This is what he told me, not sure if its exactly correct...

motherboard says:
Gigabyte GA-9IVDP
ram says
Southland G4GGL3-007521
1GBT-RD226EB-G4GGL3
NOC 1GB ECC REG 64X4 NAN
30001476-16
MIS020974

Sounds and looks CRAZY. Good luck with that mess of technology.

2HousePlague 03-04-2006 11:55 PM

Ironically, prototypes are like antiques -- value is more a matter of optimal buyer-seller matching. Looks like funky shit, though.

KRL 03-05-2006 12:01 AM

Roper69 03-05-2006 07:43 AM

That is a very strange signing bonus, I wonder if they are trying to get rid of their old machines and have run out of things to give new employees?

RawAlex 03-05-2006 11:25 AM

I found something very close: GA-9IVDT-CN

* A Dual-Processor based platform supports the New Intelhahaha174; Xeonhahaha8482; processor (800MHz FSB) with the new Extended Memory 64 Technology
* SATA Host RAID feature (RAID 0, 1) enabled to fill the needs of most internal RAID installation - secures platform availability and data safety
* New technology of PCI-E to dual Gigabit Ethernet, better bandwidth and performance than legacy I/F
* Capable to support SI/OEM projects with advanced IPMI V.1.5 management function with Gigabyte Server Management Utility for remote management and console redirection

Based on the indications this is a server motherboard rather than a personal PC style arrangement... you might want to find a nice rack mount box for it and turn it into a nice powerful server to work with, as it is certainly a very powerful board.

My bet would be that it is a special board made for google specifically for search or something... maybe the type of board used in their server clusters. It would seem to be specially made to communicate quickly to two sides of the world (one lan card to the cluster, one lan card to the world, perhaps) and the sata drives in a raid 0 raid 1 would likely be good for storing short term results / caching future pages. Tons of ram, tons of processing...

Could also be a "googlebot" board.

Alex

60grand 03-07-2006 01:15 PM

holly shit, why would they give out computers that powerful ! wow. 16gig ram, i was happy with my 1gig ..

polle45 03-07-2006 01:24 PM

yes... some on another board they were thinking that if the google bot software is on the drives, that might be worth more than the hardware

i think i might list one ram stick on ebay and see if i get knock on the door from the google squad

Stallion 03-07-2006 01:52 PM

how sure are you, your friend is telling the truth? dont want to get caught holding the goods if he stole it. :(

But if its for real, thats a sweet setup.
