I was a little curious about something. Last night, I was in a Walgreens here in Detroit. While standing in line to pay for my purchases, i noticed some t-shirts on a display. One of them said "Black Power" with a big fist in the middle (and the African continent), and the other said "Proud to be Black".
I honestly don't have a problem with this. It might as well say "Proud to be American" or something. My only question is, how come the shirts that say "White Power" or "Proud to be White" are considered amounst other things, to be racist and not politically correct? I mean, I am not a racist, but i am proud of my heritage, which is german and irish. White.
So, I'm not posting this to start shit, I just wanted peoples opinion on why this is so, and what you all thought about it, if you thought anything at all about it. :)

I agree with you Caroline. I'm not racist either. We all come from the same place to begin with so we're all just the same.

I suppose black Americans can 'get away' with wearing these things because their ancestors were persecuted for generations by the European white settlers.
I'm not saying it is right or wrong to wear these t-shirts. As people in the porn industry we champion each individual's right to say and do pretty much what he/she wants to do. It is a bit twisted that a 'white power' tee is considered offensive. But then saying that, I don't think it comes down to the actual t-shirt.
Instead it is USUALLY the people who wear them and their views on society. The KKK has done in the past, and continues to do now, horrific things to people of all 'non-white' races. I think that it is the implications that the words have gained over the centuries that offend, and not necessarily the words themselves.

Hell I went to the south 2 years ago and was shocked and mortified to see how segregation still exhists down there, even if chosen segregation! It is wrong in anyway, I dont believe that there should be african-american, white, black, asian, mexican-american or anything. It should be like it was! African, American, Canadian, English, Irish, Chinese, etc.

LOL I just love the fact that people of strong african decent that really try and use the "white" argument that we are the bad guys in the deal more slaves were shipped off to brazil than any other country and the worst part of the whole deal with slave trade was the fact that it was blacks that were enslaving there own and making a buck off the deal. If life in America were equal for blacks and whites, you'd have a point. However, given the circumstances, complaints from whites sound a bit catty and misplaced. It's sort of like complaining about handicap parking spots or the fact that we build ramps for wheelchairs. I'm not slavery reparations or anything, because none of us were slave owners, and in fact many of use would probably be richer if our white ancestors hadn't had to compete with unpaid black laborers for jobs. However, they were the slaves and we (for the most part) were not and so they are getting in the race a bit late. You must have more important things to worry about.

Keev i completely agree.A lot of africans were sold by their own people for salt and silk.My problem is that this country was built upon slavery and yet and still people act like its not.Case and point,our nation literally split between people who wanted to be rich and keep slavery and people who thought that everyone regardless of color was equal.African americans were considered 3/4 of a person in america better yet lets go back to the original deal here.Africans were under the impression that there were going to be here for 7 years to help start a country(ever heard of indentured slaves).The deal was that we were to come here and after 7 years would be free.Well cotton was flowing and thriving and the South didnt want to let the slaves go and therefore the war started.Im 100% against anyone of any color getting a handout all im saying is if the playing field was level the mentality of most minorities and people of all colors would have a different mentality..think about it

Indentured servants were almost entirely British and Irish until the crown put a stop to it.

People stuck on slaves ships in shackles were not under any impression that they were going to be free in 7 years. They were sold as slaves by slave traders of their own race.

A lot of the problems are self inflicted at this point.

Black guy is born into a ghetto situation. Busts his ass through school to graduate with all A's. Works two jobs and gets through college to get his degree with whatever financial aid he gets from the govt.

Works hard at his job to make a success of himself and is able to move out of the ghetto into a nice area.

Is he considered a role model?

Perhaps you should learn a little about the history of the city in which you live - in the '70's - yes the 1970's - Jews couldn't swim in public pools or beaches in Toronto - you want to see Jewish power - head up to Finch and Bathurst and walk North on any given Saturday.

As someone who's first wife was black, I can tell you it's different growing up black than white, but I also don't agree with the excuses for failing based primarily on color...my first wife's parents owned a small store and were basically typical middleclass business owners who never allowed their children to use their blackness as an excuse for failure........I think it's more about values of those around them....today's black youth has Jesse Jackson telling them if they fail, it's because a white man is denying them...they have someone like Louis Farakhan(sp?) telling them it's the white man's fault of they fail....if someone grows up hearing nothing but that, how can they be expeted to know any different?

In the 60's it was most definately harder for a black person to succeed, but those times have changed. While it is still tough, it is still possible to rise to the top.,..the reason we don't see more upperclass blacks talking about injustices, it's because they are too busy making money....

While I agree that it was fucked up that until about 30-40 years ago a black man couldn't sit at the same table as a white man, it doesn't mean that should be a continued excuse for failure......

as for the whole white power/black power thing...who really gives a fuck? I'm all about the green power :)

i think most of you need to come visit us here in Detroit. things must be so different here than where you all live. to be surrounded by a people, that for the most part do nothing to improve their situation, yet have the fucking balls to bitch and complain and start shit... it makes no sense to me. Before the 60's this was one of the most beautiful cities in the u.s. i have seen pictures. and now??? i cant tell you how many times i have gone "ghetto driving" through the streets of Detroit, just to see burnt down houses, complete blocks with these gorgeous houses over 50 years old, in shambles. perhaps you are familiar with "devils night"... well i can tell you that it wasnt the "whities" setting the flames. why would they do that to their own neightborhoods? then complain about the state of their city? want more money from the government for improvements? bullshit. i am proud to be white. and there shouldnt be anything wrong with that, and i shouldnt be labled as anything. i have had many black friends who were some of the best people i have ever met. i have nothing against black people. but when i see what they do to their own (and i'm NOT trying to generalize)... to their city it makes me very angry.
