http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20060516/...survivor_taxes

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Richard Hatch, who won $1 million in the debut season of "Survivor," was sentenced Tuesday to 51 months in prison for failing to pay income taxes on his reality TV prize and other earnings.

Hatch, 45, was convicted in January. The charges carried a maximum of 13 years in prison.

Hatch, who has been in a jail in Plymouth, Mass., since his conviction, claimed he thought the show's producers would pay his taxes and pleaded ignorance about money matters, saying he forgot to tell his accountants about some income.

"Survivor" earned CBS a ratings hit and made Hatch one of TV's most famous villains. He also became known as "the fat naked guy" ? a term coined by David Letterman ? for refusing to wear clothes for much of the show.

Heh, the first thing the host said at the finally this year to the newest winner was "one word of advice, pay your taxes"

Tom_PM 05-16-2006 09:49 AM

lol, wow he's such a dipshit. He should have just taken his medicine when he had a chance instead of trying to claim something contrary to what was in black and white.

Now that's just fucking brilliant :1orglaugh :thumbsup

Pleasurepays 05-16-2006 10:55 AM

he is not going to jail for "not paying taxes". the news stories always say that he did not pay taxes on 1,000,000.00 in prize money and that got him into trouble. it has to be more than that. if you dont pay your taxes, they send you a bill which includes penalties and interest... if you lie about your income otherwise evade taxes, they prosecute. not only that, the judge thought he was an asshole and that he perjured himself in court which was also a factor.

BloodFart 05-16-2006 11:04 AM

haha, what a stupid tax system, it costs about 150 a day to jail someone, so while the us gvt won the lawsuit, rhode island taxpayers lose $220k.. fucking brilliant.

p2p chad 05-16-2006 11:05 AM

wow, what a complete moron! serves him right for acting all high & mightly for screwin other people over!
now the statement from Survivor makes sense..."...pay your taxes" i didn't hear this till now!

heis going to love all that COCK.

kane 05-16-2006 01:04 PM

A guy on the Howard Stern show called Crazy Cabbie got a year in jail for basically the same thing only less money involved. After he was sentenced his lawyer came on the show and said it is really simple. You don't go to jail for not paying your taxes, you go to jail for lying on your taxes. From what I understand Hatch didn't report his winnings and he made a bunch of money from appearanced and stuff like that after the show was over and he didn't report most of that. What he should have done is admit his mistake, file an amended return, pay his taxes and pleed no contest. He may have still went to jail, but probably not for as long.

KRL 05-16-2006 01:15 PM

If you read the full indictment he did a lot of obviously deliberate and funky accounting, lied and perjured himself during the trial and even changed out payees on checks.

You can read the indictment on this link.

Yeah, it's pretty damn obvious that he didn't just "forget" to pay. He just plain about and lied about it.

ready lube 05-16-2006 03:41 PM

What a funny story. I guess it kinda like a pay back for some of the old cast/ crew. :)

The highest tax rate in the us Is 35% of coruse that 35% doesn't apply until you reach over $326K in taxble income.

A single guy with no dedections except presonal exemption would pay just under $328K in taxes. Leaving $672K to do whatever the hell you want. If someone wrote me a check for $1 mil I'd gladly give the IRS $328K

Screaming 05-16-2006 05:43 PM

yikes that sucks

DaddyHalbucks 05-16-2006 05:51 PM

Who would have ever pegged him for a cut-throat, conniving, fuck the system, win at all cost kind of guy?

Awesome. I hated that bastard. One thing you learn is don't fuck with the governments money. That's how they caught Al Capone, income tax evasion.

it would be more sensational if he would turn out to be a murderer in the end. HAha
it is understandable that all he won he doesn't want to give back even a small part of it.
