Poor diet is more harmful than obesity or smoking
Hmm this is interesting :2 cents:
Poor diet as bad as smoking for health: Dutch report AMSTERDAM (Reuters) - Insufficient consumption of fish, fruit and vegetables is as bad for human health as smoking, a Dutch report said on Monday. The study, which the European Food Safety Authority says it will use when analyzing food and diet risks, concludes that most cases of serious illness and death in the Netherlands is caused by poor diet. "Taking into account not just deaths but also years spent living with serious disability, unhealthy dietary habits cause as much health loss as does smoking," said the Dutch National Institute for Public Health and the Environment (RIVM). "Unhealthy diet composition currently reduces the average life expectancy of 40-year-old Dutch by 1.2 years, while obesity claims 0.8 years." Some 75 percent of the Netherlands' 16 million people eat fruit and vegetables below the recommended level, said the report, which is a result of an extensive research into the effects of current food trends in the country. Each year in the Netherlands, poor diet causes about 13,000 deaths due to diabetes, cardiovascular disease and cancer, while obesity claims 7,000 lives by causing heart disease and cancer, it said. By comparison, foodborne infections cause between 20 and 200 deaths each year. RIVM researchers recommended that governments around the world should start encouraging a healthy diet to improve public health, rather than trying to improve food safety. The Dutch researchers also say that about 25 percent of deaths and serious illness caused by overweight and obesity would be avoided if all adults would shed 3 kgs. "In particular, attempts at reducing saturated and trans fatty acid uptake and increasing fish, fruit and vegetables consumption could save many lives," the report said. Saturated and trans fatty acids -- which come from animal fats, tropical oils such as coconut and palm oils as wells as processed vegetable oils -- raise the levels of cholesterol and the risk of heart disease. The head of the European Food Safety Authority, Herman Koeter, who received a copy of the report, said in the RIVM statement that it would be a leading document in Europe when making risk analysis of food and diets. Meat consumption in the Netherlands, one of the world's biggest meat producers and exporters, is about 50 percent higher than the recommended levels and stands at about 83-85 kg per capita a year, researchers say. On the other hand, drs always recommend including a lot of veg.s, fruits, fish in the diet or eating only those. |

this is hardly anything new or novel and i am a little confused as to why its news. must be a slow news day in the land of wooden shoes. The US Dept of Agriculture is not the only country that has been providing dietary guidelines and telling people to eat well for well over a century as part of its mission and purpose. |
also, it seems silly to compare the long term, negative health effects of unhealthy diets to those of obesity since obesity is caused by unhealthy diets and the two are interrelated.

You can get good proteins in a vegetarian diet, if you eat tofu and humus 3 times a day... |

Boy did my family ever find this out the hard way.... or should I say my HUSBAND found it out.
When my kids were all babies, I started them out on fruits and vegetables VERY early on. When they were starting on solid foods, the main things I shoved down their throats were fruits and veggies. They are all older now, 8,12,17, and 22 and I have to say one of the proudest things for me is the fact they will eat just about anything there is to eat OUTSIDE of junk food. They will go to a restaurant and order salads and shit before they will burgers and fries. They eat those things people hate to eat so much, broccoli, cauliflower, brussel sprouts and so on. My HUSBAND however, just started eating right a couple of years ago but far too late in life as we just had to have his gall bladder removed because his eating habits were pathetic at best. When we first got together, if it wasn't pizza, spaghetti or oreos he wanted no part of it. NOW he eats all these things and likes them, but far too damn late. ALWAYS introduce your kids to the good things when they are babies..... I can lay a bag of candy down on the table and a bag of fruit right beside it. A week later the fruit will be history and the candy will be opened and wasted. Good eating habits are crucial, but kids can't learn to eat right if they aren't introduced to it at a very early age. |

much negativity comes from not feeling GOOD---and feeling good means we must take responsibility for what we do with our bodies. the truth about nutrition has been known for many years, but like anything else, people must take advantage of the wisdom for it to do any good. children do not have a choice much about what they eat. this comes from their caregivers, and establishes the foundation for what they will eat as adults and what they will feed to THEIR children, and if we start them right this bodes well for our future offspring many generations down the line. it is critical today in this age of commercially processed "food" which is produced for PROFIT and marketability that we begin to take responsibility for what we put in our bodies. this means understanding nutrition, reading labels at the supermarket, and eating for health, rather than pleasure. and as we get older this becomes more important. good health is accomplished mostly through nutrition and exercise, there is no "magic bullet". but tangible results are within anyone's grasp who will take the initative to do something about it for THEMSELVES. today is memorial day, and most everyone in america is relaxing and drinking beer and eating barbecue ribs. i won't eat barbecue today, i've already had my big bowl of oatmeal, milled flaxseed, walnuts, and raisins. and this afternoon in our subdivision we have a community work party, painting the horse stable, fixing fences, and doing landscaping in the common area, etc. and i am age 56, and i have watched my diet for years and ride my bike 10 miles every single day, and i will be able to work all afternoon starting right after lunch. and no one else will, from teenagers to adults, no one else. and it is the same every fucking year. i am the only flat belly in the group. ok sermon over. eat to live, take care of your body. make more money, bang more beaver. life is valuable and finite. |

We rarely ever fry anything anymore, maybe 2-3 times a month or so. And we have been eating more frozen and fresh veggies than canned/processed shit. It's funny because my husband's best friend and his kids used to come to the house and they ate so bad. I was having a bowl of broccoli/cauliflower/carrots and their son wanted to see what was in the bowl. He was like 2 at the time and I started to give him a bite of what I had, his mom and dad swore that he'd never eat that. That little shit ate the whole bowl and wanted more. Proving kids will eat what they are introduced to. My family eats a lot of oatmeal and things like that. This isn't to say they do not eat junk at all, but they tend to waste more of the junk food than they do the "good for them" foods. People that say "My kids won't ever eat that" are the ones who have never been introduced to it. They eat what they are TAUGHT to eat, same as they act how they are taught to act. I am not the perfect parent, but when it comes to their diet and attitude, I am pretty strict about that. Their dad is too now and this helps alot. LOL |
Your average person will never eat the way they are supposed to as long as there's a McDonalds on every corner.
