Wanna see one of the biggest hotlinking assholes!

http://www.redway.org/main.html

This asshole hotlinks shitloads of servers everday. Most of the time he preys on webmasters that forgot to put an index.html in their image directory and he has enought traffic to easily push your bandwidth through the fucking ceiling. Don't know he can continue to do this shit and not get shutdown.

All I can say is what a fucking prick!

funkmaster 06-02-2002 02:41 PM

... so you are calling me a "fucking prick" ?? that right ??

michaelw 06-02-2002 02:41 PM

someone should img src his ass LOL :winkwink:

X37375787 06-02-2002 02:42 PM

why is hotlinking still such a big issue, if it's easy to protect yourself ? :eek7

michaelw 06-02-2002 02:44 PM

cause some people dont know how.. and these people wont take advantage of the people that have protected themselves, but the people that didnt because they dont know how..

of every 5 servers, Id say 3-4 probably havent protected themselves.. and assholes like to take advantage of this

and plus its literally stealing

If you are the one that runs that site or you are another webmaster that uses the same technique then FUCK YES! And let me say a big FUCK YOU for listing my server on your shit site! That asshole cost me a huge fucking bandwidth bill because I had one of my many domains that had one fucking directory that wasn't protected. I was lucky enough that another webmaster gave me a heads up before the situation got to out of control.

Yes I know it is the responsibility of webmasters to protect themselves from this type of theft but just because you leave the door to your house open doesn't mean people should be able to walk in and take whatever they want.

pr0 06-02-2002 02:47 PM

wow that kicks ass, im going to bookmark :)

The guy posts links to other sites. He's not using other people's images on his site without permission, he's not hacking anyone, or doing anything illegal that I can tell. He's linking to another site, just like any other link. If you don't like it, then don't make that link available.

What you are talking about, linking to a directory which has a list of all the images, is the way that most TGP's used to do it in the old days.

If he was pulling other people's images into his site, then I would say fuck him up, but the fact that he links to some directory page on another server is not illegal. Linking to a page on another website without permission is not illegal, right? When was the last time you asked permission before you posted a link to a Yahoo picture or story?

If you don't like it, you can stop someone from linking to a specific page on your site by using technology.

allright 06-02-2002 03:00 PM

another issue regarding redway is the number of so called big time legitimate tgps that trade with him - why would you show your support by trading with someone who if he hotlinked your site or pics you would be screaming about it.

You couldn't be more wrong. If you are linking to indexes of images which were not intended to be made public and doing it without the permission of the owner you are STEALING! Plain and simple. In the old days yes people used to do this and the reason why it was legitmate or ok most of the time was because it was the webmaster himself who submitted the link to the index of images thereby giving permission to link it. I can't believe you would defend this guy. The site gets a shitload of traffic and there are a lot of webmasters paying for huge bandwidth bills because of it.

tiger 06-02-2002 03:10 PM

Let me also say I'm very aware that you can protect yourself from people like this but when you run a lot of sites by yourself once and a while you leave a directory unprotected by accident. Just like when you accidently leave the door to your house unlocked. That doesn't mean anyone can just walk in and steal your shit and it is ok. And when you say its not hacking you are wrong it is hacking, very simple hacking but still it is hacking.

He's linking to a page on a website. If you don't want people to link to that page, then use a fucking .htaccess. There is nothing illegal about what he's doing, right? Show me the law.

A law that would stop linking to directories would also stop linking to any page on the web without permission of the site owner. If we used your logic, then the web wouldn't exist.

I am against content theft, but this is not that. He is linking to a page on your site and you didn't give him permission to - well, then stop him. Again, when was the last time you asked permission to link to a page on any website? I bet you don't ask permission to link to other sites either, right?

it's just like the "smurf" DoS back in the day. everyone who was "on top of" the issue instantly patched their stuff, and it slowly trickled. but there's a lot of people out there who don't have regular contact with the internet, and don't keep up with things. also with companies constantly cycling through employees, old network admins who set up the equipment were gone, and the new ones didn't know how to fix it or no one ever wound up "owning" the equipment in question...

i guess that is slightly related to why there's a lot of people out there with directory indexes and hotlinking enabled.. either they don't know how or are completely oblivious to the fact that people can and will do that to them. in time they'll learn, once they get fat server fees for a while.

You should protect your whole server from showing directories, that way you don't have to worry about it. You don't have to do it for each directory.

You can set it up so that any directory on your machine that doesn't have an index file will show this (403):

"You don't have permission to access /directory/ on this server."

You can do that system wide & you can set up a custom error page too.

Yes I would ask for permission if I was going to link to a server in such a way that I could possibly 1. bring the server down by overloading it with traffic or 2. Cause the webmaster to pay a large bandwidth bill.

And yes there is a law against it. It is called bandwidth theft! If you look on the fucking page you will see that even the guy posting the shit knows what he is doing is wrong. Look at some of the links they say "cracked by".....
In other words hacked and stolen. Wake the fuck up and stop defending losers!

Hmmm, I dont see any hot linked images on his site.

m0rph3us 06-02-2002 03:35 PM

why do we see everyday another dufus that comes on here and posts 'oh my god, hotlinker' or 'oh my god copyright violation'. If it's YOUR business that he's fucking up, put a damn index.html or modify your httd.conf to not list directories and while you're at it, redirect all traffic from his site onto your domain, to a sponors. Stop crying.

Gee your not biased or anything you help run a site that does the same fucking thing. No one is crying I just wanted to let other webmasters know what happened to me so they won't have to make the same mistake or pay the same price I did. And you can kiss my ass because your site is one of the biggest promoters of this bullshit technique. Kiss my ass

If someone today doesnt protect his image directory
it means he or she is a moron.
More power to that guy.He doesnt do anything illegal

Honeyslut 06-02-2002 10:55 PM

That site hacks ! I have had several of my domains listed on that site and I know for a fact that they both had .htaccess that was working. Furthermore, one of them was set-up by my host. Someone changed it.

:BangBang:

That's a hardcore accusation. Sorry, I don't believe that Redway hacks. I would have to see some proof.

hyper 06-03-2002 03:35 AM

on your root server directory
in your .htaccess put this

Options -Indexes

no more directory browsing :)

Milton 06-03-2002 03:53 AM

haha

pr0view 06-03-2002 04:38 AM

there is nothing illegal in linking to a directory.

Kat - Fast 06-03-2002 04:39 AM

Jesus - I remember redway from years ago, I didn't realise it was still running strong - quality porn!
