Slipper clutch
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Jump to: navigation, search

Slipper clutches are specialized clutches developed for racing motorcycles to eliminate the effects of engine braking when riders would decelerate as they entered corners. They are designed to disengage or "slip" when the rear wheel tries to drive the engine faster than it would normally. The engine braking forces in conventional clutches will normally be transmitted back along the drive chain causing the rear wheel to hop, chatter or lose traction. Slipper clutches eliminate this extra loading on the rear suspension giving riders a more predictable ride and eliminate the risk of over-revving the engine during downshifts.

In plain terms when you brake and downshift to enter a turn, with a normal clutch, if you downshift too much, when you release the clutch the rear wheel will chatter or hop off the ground. Which makes entering the turn a pain in the ass.

With the slipper clutch it will not cause the chatter or hop so the entry into the turn will be smooth, I wish they had that when I raced :(

I high sided once in a race in Jamaica on a Honda F2 600 from to much chatter.

I cannot compare the ZX10R Vs an R1?

But I can compare the GSXR1000 and the R1,

The GSXR feels light and quick, the R1 feels more solid, the GSXR when entering a turn you have to force it down and hold it, like a real race bike.

The R1 just drops into a turn very easy to ride fast, it also has more lowend power does nice roll on wheelies, the GSXR needs to be reveded more to get the same result.
