Windows 64 bits question (XP/Vista)

I am going to install Windows 64 bits and I want to know if I can run all the programs I am currently running on windows 32 bits platform.

żOr do I need to get a version of each of those programs, specially prepared for 64 bits platform?

Basically, the programs I usually run are:

Photoshop, Dreamweaver, Fireworks, VegasVideo, TmpegEnc, Image Optimizers like Xat, AVI MPEG Splitter just to name a few.

Those programs will all work... now, if you have dual core, then you might run into issues if they are older version software.

It's hardware that you might run into trouble with 64 bit... because not everything out there has 64 bit drivers.

well - i could answer that from personal experience, but since you're an asshole i'll leave it like that. :winkwink:

They will all work, but chances are you'll run into random programs that don't work and you'll want to switch back. I bet it has changed by now, but last time I tried XP 64bit edition there wasn't even a 64bit flash player.

All in all it just wasn't as stable as I wanted so I decided to wait awhile. 64bit Linux distros work great, but then again you run into the now 64bit flash player thing unless, like I said, is different now.

what's the point, last time I checked there is no performance or really any other benefit from using 64bit version?

It should be noted that speed is not the only factor to consider in a comparison of 32-bit and 64-bit processors. Applications such as multi-tasking, stress testing, and clustering (for HPC) may be more suited to a 64-bit architecture given the correct deployment. 64-bit clusters have been widely deployed in large organizations such as IBM, Vodafone, HP, Microsoft for this reason.

I run 64 bit on both my laptop and pc, never had any problems with any programs

GoodGuy 07-06-2006 07:38 PM

Looks good. ;)

This is an excellent question since I just ordered my new laptop with 64 bit architecture.

Anyone have experience with the AMD Turion 64?

I'm aware of the benefits of 64-bit processors, but with current software, for desktop use I don't think there are any...

cellmoresmut 07-07-2006 06:57 AM

Forget about 64 bit Vista... runs like a pig needs 2 gigs o'ram and it won't load drivers nor run a lot of 64 XP programs...

DAMNMAN 07-07-2006 07:32 AM

No, everything will not work on XP64

I have a new box 3.2 64bit dual core.

Had a tough time finding a video card EPCI that would work.
Nuendo 3 doesn't work on it.
Music Match doesn't work on it.
Deep Freeze doesn't work on it.
Acronis true image doesn't work on it.

Etc........

Many programs work without issues
Premiere Pro 1.51 and 2.0
Reason 3
Offica 2003
Nero 6.6

etc.....

It's fast as a MOFO w/only 2gigs of RAM

I don't know if I'd go 64bit again 'cause I really like to deep freeze my boxes and back-up images with accronis true image.

Did Imention that it was real fast even running 32 bit stuff.

Hope that this helps
