Anyone live in or been on vaction to Norway?

A friend is trying to get me to join them on a trip to Norway in the early part of January. We haven't yet decided between Oslo or Bergen. There are more flights into Oslo but Bergen sounds like an interesting place. Anyway, does anyone have an tips on getting the most out of a trip to Norway?

joshll 08-07-2006 08:14 AM

ffmihai 08-07-2006 08:15 AM

DamageX 08-07-2006 08:25 AM

I live in a country that has wide-spread jokes about Norwegians, does that count? :)

fastfun 08-07-2006 08:30 AM

It will be cold as hell in January, remember that.
I recommend Bergen over Oslo any day. Not that much to see in Oslo really, but still a nice city.

Sarah_Jayne 08-07-2006 08:48 AM

yeah...I am aiming towards Bergen even if it means the flights are a bit of a pain. Would consider a ferry but I need to find how much they would cost. I think they go direct to Bergen from Newcastle. I am not sure what January is going to be like there. Experiencing winter there is part of the whole idea, I guess.

Michael O 08-07-2006 08:49 AM

Bring lots of cash, everything in Norway is insanely expensive.

Evil Chris 08-07-2006 08:50 AM

I've been to Tromso in the north.

That's where you'll get a unique Norwegian feeling.
Make sure you see the fjords.

Tdog 08-07-2006 08:54 AM

January in Norway, sounds cold.

I am guessing that is part of the idea. I grew up in some seriously cold weather but it has been a long time since I have had to deal with it.

Rockatansky is from Norway, hit him up for some info

OG LennyT 08-07-2006 10:12 AM

Norway is great for skiing in january.. not in Oslo though.. you'll have to get outside the city.. very friendly ppl those norwegians :thumbsup

KingK7 08-07-2006 10:45 AM

Norway in january is a bad idea, unless you love the cold...

OY 08-07-2006 11:24 AM

Go to Oslo, Bergen sucks ass in January. Actually, ALL of Norway sucks in January for the most part, but you can get lucky and have temeratures around freezing point which is not that bad. Most Januarys I recall when growing up in Norway was +/- 10 degrees celcius (equals 14 degrees Farenheit) - sometimes as low as -25 to -30 degrees celcius (-13F to -22F) - going alpine or cross country skiing tended to be a tiny bit tough then, but doable as long as you brought with you plenty of JAGERMEISTER to warm yourself with.

But hey, it can be a fun experience in itself just dealing with the cold like that too ;-)

What is the point of going to a Nordic country when it is warm?

What would you suggest seeing in Oslo?

The higher end of the winter temps isn't that far off what I grew up with in winter. You just have to dress warm and get in the right mental place.

Nazgrel 08-07-2006 11:50 AM

If you are going to Norway you should come up here to Tromsų. Especialy in January since citys like Oslo and Bergen get a bit boring during the winter. However, its even colder up here than in Oslo. Oslo is usualy 0 - -10 in the winter but in Tromsų you get around -15.

Seeing as there is not that much culture and tourist attractions to see in the winter you should go for nature. Witch means you should go the the West Coast (around Bergen) or up North (around Tromsų). Personaly Id recomend the North as it in my opinion has the most butifull mountains and fjords during winter.

PS: In January the sun has not yet risen in the North, just so you know. Its not night dark but you wont se the sun and the days are short.

Yup, that is another thing I think would be interesting to experience. The idea of the other side of 'the midnight sun' is something I have never been through.

Evil Chris 08-07-2006 12:35 PM

sarah, I believe I said Tromso didnt I? ;)

If you haven't seen the fjords, you haven't seen Norway.

-15 as you know isn't that cold.

I will have to look into what flights we would be able to get there. I don't drive and my friend has never driven in snow (wimpy British weather) so being able to get around it an issue.
