Any old timer SysOp's here?

Any old timer SysOp's here?

Back in the early 90's, I ran a bbs (part shareware, part porn (I was a teenager so part l33t warez to)... At it's peak, my board had 4 nodes (running remote access, I always hated PCBoard and wildcrap).

Anyone else? Let talk history ;)

Whatever happened to 'the windy city' ?? I used to have traders dialing in all the time uploading pics with their watermark...

bizarredollars 08-17-2006 07:25 AM

btw... for the north of the UK, 4 nodes is quite a lot.. even the london boards, I only know of 2 that that had more than 8.. and one of them is now a well respected ISP.

cellmoresmut 08-17-2006 07:26 AM

Yea I used to run a Mac BBS (Hermes) Myron's Manor I'm told it was one of the longest running Hermes boards around.

StuartD 08-17-2006 07:35 AM

Yup, had a BBS for quite a while.
I miss LORD and BRE and Trade Wars.

Dollarmansteve 08-17-2006 07:37 AM

Of course.. In '92-'94 I had a board called LSD IV (Liquid Speed Dome IV) - warez.. porn.. I was sooo l33t

bizarredollars 08-17-2006 07:37 AM

Hermes.. I never heard of... I did exchange files with a mac bb owner for a while.. mac files were tiny compared to dos stuff..

Yeah - I remember LORD and BRE... I could never get into the RPG thing, but my members loved it.

bizarredollars 08-17-2006 07:38 AM

Legend Of The Red Dragon... Lol.. no reason why that could not be ported into perl or php, and use feeds to syndicate... worth thinking about I guess..

Dagwolf 08-17-2006 07:39 AM

I ran a BBS for 2 days. :D hehe

It was fun setting it up but I decided I wanted to play games more.

I was a cosysop on a couple of boards. I have source code for a some BBS software somewhere on my XT clone. I also wrote a BBS game similar to Operation Overkill, but it worked much faster and better.

Tom were you 'involved' back in the day??

bizarredollars 08-17-2006 07:47 AM

I would also like to know if anyone knows the full story about Rusty'n'Eddies??... I got the gist of what happened with amateur action via 2600 quarterly at the time, but no real discussion..

Can we discuss the busts and the reasons why??

I know AA were dealing in underage stuff (even if it was just nudes, they were still kids, so I have no sympathy), so if the got busted, the deserved it.. but whenever I dialed into R+E (at massive expensive from the uk at that time), I got warez and relatively low quality porn... The first I knew of the bust was through a PPA (phederal phuking authority) or similar release.

Any info would be nice :) -- Ancient history, but would be nice to know.

bizarredollars 08-17-2006 07:49 AM

What language did you code at the time tom?? I learnt the basics of C to improve my BBS, and now I am an adult, it pays 90% of my weekly income.

bizarredollars 08-17-2006 08:30 AM

What did you run?? PCB?? RA? RBB?? Info please... were you part of fidonet?? my fido was: f205.n256.z2 (2.256.205) with about 80 points... all geeky teens.

Mostly turbo pascal with some assembly modules for speed. I started to learn c++ also, but instead of being on the computer 24/7, I had to get a "real" job to help pay some bills.

Sarah_Jayne 08-17-2006 08:41 AM

people actually got beaten up in the halls ways in my school over trade wars. Of course nobody but the nerds knew that was the reason.

AaronM 08-17-2006 08:55 AM

I was a beta tester for Mustang Software between 1993 and 1997. Ran a Wildcat BBS with 16 nodes and dominated L.O.R.D. on every BBS that I could telnet into. I still have the modem pool laying around somewhere if anybody needs one for a museum or something. :glugglug

McHenery's has their shit everywhere. I think that was the first online porn for me too.

dennisthemenace 08-17-2006 09:08 AM

I ran a multi-line board. Shareware, online games, porn..

Made the top 100 in Boardwatch magazine in 1993.

Psycho Ward BBS run on Cnet Amiga software.. WHOOO.. :)

Brad Gosse 08-17-2006 09:14 AM

I ran a small BBS for a while on an old 286. I remember upgrading to a 486 33mhz with 16 MB of ram for running the bbs and all the computer store geeks thought I was rich. Nobody had that much ram back in the day lol.

Nasty 08-17-2006 09:32 AM

I used to run a 12 node pcboard bbs, used to mirror everything from exec bbs in NY, plus had the warez and the porn, fun times, still have the usrobotics modems and the 2 2500meg external drives, they cost me so much fucking money I just cant seem to throw them away

bringer 08-17-2006 09:37 AM

look at all the nerds :1orglaugh

i used to run a 3 node PCB setup in the 90's - The Junction - WHQ and GHQ of quite some groups, mainly demo/ansi/cracking scene related stuff..

damn, those were *teh* timezZ!

Thumbking 08-17-2006 10:04 AM

I used to run a BBS. Had it going for 3 years, or so under a few names. I met a guy from florida that was involved with a really big ansi art crew who decked his board out for him, then when he moved near me we transfered all the images to a modded renegade BBS. Was called Higher Grounds. Was art, warez and porn of course :thumbsup

Was playing the new PHP version for a while, but since GamePort bought the rights to Legend of the Red Dragon, it had to be called Legend of The Green Dragon kinda fun if you can get enough people playing :thumbsup

good ol times! :1orglaugh

Ah, the good old days ;)

We started in the very early 90's.. First with Wildcat, tons of adult pics, some door games, etc.

In 93 or 94 we switched to major bbs (galacticomm) and got up to 60 lines with cd changers of adult / shareware, chat, games, etc.

It was fun as heck and we would have bbs parties every couple months - ah the memories. A few people that met in our chat got married..

Sometimes miss the old bbs days, more local you know...
