asacp.org scam, what the fuck!!

I got this email today:

Hi! I am abuse manager of asacp.org, the organization which fights with the child pornography expansion in Internet. We look through great number of our member's reports. Though we are not governmental organization, we gained a great experience working with FBI. In a number of cases we participate in analyzing of data bases, got from web hosting providers, in order to reveal child porno traffic systems.
I'd like to inform you that investigating activity of the one of child porno sites; we found e-mails data base, in which was your e-mail [email protected]. In view of this, I have two versions: either you are the client of this shop, or your e-mail appeared there accidentally. I sincerely hope that it was accidental coincidence and believe that you are interested in this version as well. If you show a good will, make modest, voluntary donation on our site: http://www.asacp.org/donation.html, I will be convinced in your being not implicated in this business. Don't forget to indicate your e-mail address in the payment comment. In attachment to this letter I sent all the details, showing that your e-mail address found not accidentally in our database. Also there is the list of US law clauses, under which you can be made answerable.
Good luck!

O.k. I assume they are better then this, but the only link in the email goes to there donation page.

The i.p. that sent it was from Taiwan.

Would they have a spammer send out this crap but in a way that it's not really from them?

Weird.

Libertine 08-20-2006 05:48 PM

Someone is trying to damage them. Possibly a foreign cp peddler they got shut down.

CDSmith 08-20-2006 05:48 PM

I can pretty much guarantee that it's not coming from the real asacp.

I take it you didn't donate then? :D

elron 08-20-2006 05:49 PM

have you checked the email source to see where it really came from ?

Yes it cam from Taiwan, but I think it would be a profitable scam if they paid someone under the table to send out a couple million of these through a third party.

CDSmith 08-20-2006 05:53 PM

It reads like an extortion letter from a foriegner with bad english skills.

"We suspects you're into cp, donate to us or else"

Yeah, that sounds like asacp's MO. :D

The Ghost 08-20-2006 05:55 PM

Shoehorn posting about it here. Pretty fucked up. Wonder how many people got it and the source of the mailing list......

Also wonder if anyone donated.

Nookster 08-20-2006 05:56 PM

Looks like someone is trying to damage their rep imho. The English in that message was extremely butchered. So it definitely came from a foreigner. :2 cents:

Drake 08-20-2006 06:02 PM

Nah, just forward the email to the real asacp

Libertine 08-20-2006 06:02 PM

The awkward use of definite and indefinite articles indicates that the writer is most likely a native Russian, Korean, Chinese or Japanese speaker (there are some other, smaller, languages which don't use them, but these are the most likely ones). Since this seems to be consistent with the IP, the writer is quite likely to indeed be Taiwanese (either that, or a Russian, Korean or Chinese using a Taiwanese proxy - in which case Chinese seems the most likely origin of the three).

Knowing that the author is probably from one of these countries, which are all more or less well-known for their part in spreading cp (or relative lack of prevention), and knowing that the author most likely intends to harm the reputation of ASACP by this, implying a personal grudge, it seems reasonable to assume that the person indeed got his site shut down.

Libertine 08-20-2006 06:04 PM

What was in the attachment? It could also be a Chinese hacker trying to spread a virus.

I wrote joan to let her know and also forwarded her the email. hopefully they can find out who is doing this and put a stop to it.

notabook 08-20-2006 09:02 PM

What a shitty, yet well thought out and quite crafty, scam.

I just went to thier site and saw this posted on it.

"Thank you for visiting ASACP (Association of Sites Advocating Child Protection)

It has come to our attention that ASACP is currently under "spoof" email attack. If you are visiting ASACP due to a threatening email you received we can assure you that this email is not from Joan Irvine, Executive Director of ASACP, nor was it sent by ASACP or any member of our organization.

The email you received is what is commonly referred to as a "spoof" email and may appear to come from our organization but this is not the case. ASACP has been attacked in this way in the past due to the work ASACP is involved. ASACP is a target for certain criminal organizations and individuals who would like nothing better than to hinder our operations. This appears to have been written by someone with the purpose of discrediting ASACP and the work we do.

Unfortunately, there is very little that can be done to prevent these types of cyber attacks but if you did receive a copy of this email please forward the original email with full headers to [email protected] with "Spoof Email" as the subject. This may assist us in the investigation of this matter.

If you have already made a donation to ASACP, under duress, as a result of this "spoof" email please notify us at [email protected] and we will issue you a full refund. Please include a copy of the transaction receipt you received when you made the donation.

It has been confirmed by ASACP that the attachment that came with the "spoof" email you received contains a virus. If you have not already done so we would recommend that you update your virus definitions and scan your computer for virus infection.

We appreciate your support in combating child pornography and apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused.

Please scroll down to view the normal version of this page. "

Spoof Attack

Please be assured that the emails did not come from ASACP. We are working on this problem.

Thank you for your understanding.

ASACP Under "Spoof" Email Attack

Los Angeles, CA (August 21, 2006) ? The Association of Sites Advocating Child Protection (ASACP) has become the target of a massive ?spoof? email attack. The attack appears to be an effort to damage and discredit ASACP, which has fought internet child pornography for the past ten years.

The fake email has been received by an indeterminate number of victims, and includes both a virus-laden attachment and a threatening note. The note informs the recipient that their email address has been found on a database of child pornography pay site customers, and tells them to donate money to ASACP or face legal action.

While it is impossible to determine the source of the bogus emails, ASACP Compliance Director Tim Henning believes that it likely originates with the very criminals the organization strives to shut down.

?CP operators would like nothing better than to hinder our operations,? said Henning, who has overseen ASACP?s online CP reporting hotline for a decade. ?The work we do helps stop them from making money from child pornography. Unfortunately, there?s not much we can do to prevent these kinds of attacks.?

The text of the spoof email begins: ?Hi! I am abuse manager of asacp.org, the organization which fights with the child pornography expansion in Internet? and appears to have been written by someone with a poor command of written English. The email includes a link to ASACP?s donation page. However, ASACP will refund any donations made under duress due to this scam.

ASACP?s Executive Director Joan Irvine expressed dismay over the attack. ?We?ve been targeted this way before,? she noted. ?In this case, thousands or even millions of people around the world may have encountered ASACP for the first time due to this spoof email. If so, they received a false and very negative impression of us. However, we?re confident that there won?t be any lasting damage. ASACP?s long record of working to fight child sexual abuse speaks for itself.?

Anyone who received this email is encouraged to forward it with full headers to [email protected], with "Spoof Email" as the subject. This may assist ASACP in its investigation. Victims should also update their computer?s virus definitions and scan for virus infections.

Founded in 1996, the Association of Sites Advocating Child Protection (ASACP) is a non-profit organization dedicated to eliminating child pornography from the Internet. ASACP battles child pornography through its CP reporting hotline, and by organizing the efforts of the online adult industry to combat the heinous crime of child sexual abuse.
