Deadly storm in Budapest

"BUDAPEST, Hungary (Reuters) -- Two people died and a hundred were injured celebrating Hungary's national day in Budapest as a fierce storm hit the city while hundreds of thousands thronged the banks and bridges of the Danube for a fireworks party.

The sudden storm caught revellers unaware, prompting panic, and more than two boats collided on the Danube as the storm hit just after 1900 GMT when the fireworks party started, state news agency MTI reported.

Two people were killed by a falling tree as they sought shelter, emergency services said.

"Two people died between Margaret Bridge and the Chain Bridge as a tree fell on them," an emergency services spokesman said.

Hungarian state news agency MTI said one more person had also died and 250 people had been hospitalised. The figures from MTI could not be confirmed.

Witnesses said there was panic on the bridges which span the river and that waters had surged through the streets of the city close to the Danube, including a street close to the parliament.

"We were in water up to the knees," said Reuters correspondent Sandor Peto, who had been standing on the Elisabeth Bridge when the storm hit.

The President's palace in the hills of the city was also damaged and people were injured there, MTI reported.

The St Stephen's day event typically attracts many families and police said they were trying to help parents find children who been separated from them in the storm, MTI added."

it was a very frightening shit!
we were sitting on our roof, watching the firework, and almost falled down because of the wind and the icy rain!

We thought the fireworks started at 10, so when we heard them at go off at 9 we started walking down the street. Within minutes the wind appeared from nowhere and we had to struggle to get back to the house.

For once I'm glad we were late for something.

hzoltan 08-21-2006 03:18 AM

yeah you're lucky. I can't imagine what happened down at the river. I always got there with my friends to watch the fireworks, thank god we missed it this year:party-smi

Yeah, I heard that it was very nasty. I was down at Balaton with a few friends and had plans to make it back to Budapest in time to catch the fireworks. Fortunately there was huge traffic on the highway and we missed it, but could still see the chaos in the city, and a trip home that usually lasts 10 minutes took over an hour. I'm really glad we missed the show.

I was at Balaton világos and got home just before the storm kicked in. Saved myself a lot of hassle by not rushing out.

Shit for the people who got caught in it! Some friends' flats got trashed cos they left windows open. I can't imagine what it was like by the river!

In this time of the year something terrible is happening in Europe all the time. Nature is so angry in summer.

Sad celebration!

The local news said 6 people were killed.

We're staying at the Marriot Budapest and it was a mad house. The lobby looked like a refugee camp. There were people covered with blood along with men and women crying. The hotel provided towels to people so that they could get out of their clothes. It was really sad. I saw some guys shooting video of the ladies without their clothes but given the situation, I didn't think it was appropriate to do the same.

nAtuRaLbEautY 08-21-2006 07:51 PM

oh... sad to hear that :(
at least, it's over.

I was in Keszthely visiting some friends. We went to the beach to swim a little and once we've seen the black clouds we knew it was time to get out of there. Seriously, the drive home sucked, but I guess it was still better than trying to watch the fireworks downtown.

rodney25 08-23-2006 01:39 AM

That's tragic. Anyway, I'm glad you're ok.
