For the average joe is....?

sony hdr fx1, about $3600

Sony HDR-Z1U is a couple of grand more...and worth every penny.

I agree, I love my Z1U. I sleep with it under my pillow.

if you can find a Sony HC-1 buy it...the have stopped making it and the replacment HC-3 is more consumer than prosumer. The HC-3 lacks a manual focus ring and external audio outputs.

They are about $1500 if you can find one.

stay away from the HC1/HC3. I have compared the picture quality side by side with the FX1 on a big HDTV and the FX1 blows it away. On the computer monitor you wont notice any difference.

wait for the new canons that are coming out they offer more than the sonys for around the same price.

It is the CMOS vs. the 3CCD that makes the difference in quality.
