UK Stock Tips Anybody? I bought Woolworths

I just bought £10,000 (about $20,000) worth of shares in this company http://uk.finance.yahoo.com/q?s=WLW.L

This company is a piece of shit. Ever since I was a kid, I have always thought it was a piece of shit.

Here's one of the reasons why I bought it:

I have always thought that the only reason that the Internet hasn't totally CRUSHED the high street stores is because people like me hate waiting even a day for delivery. I've always thought and still do think that the next step in Ecommerce is to have SAME DAY delivery. So I order at 3pm and it's delivered at 5pm.

Well, Woolworths are about to do the next best thing. They are going to be offering 250,000 products that can be bought online but can be picked up in store and they have about 850 shops nationwide (UK) which means they are up there with the largest retailers in terms of outlets. I think this COULD be big... If the management don't fuck things up.

This is happening this month. I think I'll see some good upward movement but realize it's risky....

Anyway, buying shares like a mad man here... I like oversold bargain companys with decent dividend yields and a good track record of them to limit risk.

Any good tips?

Then you might as well go to a shop and buy the item anyways?

Very true... And a good point.

But on the net you can browse in the comfort of your own home, make sure they have what you want (stock levels etc), get net competitive prices, and Woolworths wouldn't have enough floor space to DISPLAY 250,000 products in decent quantities, but they WOULD have enough storage space (I presume) to STOCK them - so they can sell products they can't sell normally instore.

Plus the people that would buy on the net will probably pick up other items in store too generally increasing overall sales.

That company is so shit there can ONLY be upside (plus I've heard rumours of possible takeover bids etc).

Damn man you bout 10k in Woolies. Good luck. I'm not so sure tho i don't have that much confidence in them. If Philip Greene bought them then i might consider it ;)

They got a stable decent yield (about 5%) so even if things do fuck up, I'll just hold them, still beats bank interest. But yeah, it is risky. I think worst that will happen is I'll wait a couple of months, they'll only have gone up a couple of pence or so and I'll cash them in, should still make a few hundred squid.

BUMP UPDATE:

12 days has passed.

I'm up £414 so far (about 4% in less than 2 weeks is pretty good).

My £10,000 is now worth £10,414.88 if I sold today.

I think there's way more to come.

well i think woolworths are in for a fall in the long run, all they sell is things that can be bought more easier and cheaper at a supermarket. And with the demise of the highstreet and the growth of the supermarket, I would have chose something else.

Then again, Woolworths know what they are doing and they have built some very large stores out of town.

Yup you have good points. I think they will do better than you might think long term, but yes I agree, with the way things are currently (their business model, location, identity, management, brand etc) they aren't going anywhere too fast.

This is a short term - 3 monthsish - buy for me.

cheekycherry 09-04-2006 09:03 AM

I own Tesco too :winkwink: :thumbsup

scottybuzz 09-04-2006 09:12 AM

yeh i was gonna get tesco shares too, infact I used to have some and did infact make a profit with them 5 years ago. I was going to get them again but I was told tesco's are heading for a fall.
What it quite means, I have no idea !
but goodluck and you will see what happens in the future

high street in the uk has suffered a lot, and woolworths arent the only shop to allow that, argos have been doing that for years (i myself have used the service). however i dont think argos have marketed effectively the online ordering irl collection, maybe woolworths can do a much better job of that.

either way, you have reaped some profit in a nice time, good luck!

UPDATE #2: UP 8% in 2 weeks if I sold now.

Woolworths made an aquisition yesterday of a small company, made a decent improvement in share price but I held firm expecting more gains when the news got out this morning.

Well, this morning there is takeover speculation of Woolworths themselves and it's hitting all the major investment news sources.

If I sold right now I'd get £10,800 approx 8% and that's within 14 days that's even with buying fees, margins and taxes taken into consideration.

I'm holding, there's still more to come. I expect they'll be up maybe 10% by the end of this week if these takeover rumours hold firm.

Good luck. Woolworth's did so great here in the states that after decades upon decades, the 90s crushed their soul, and their buildings, into dust like so many Nirvana fans.

the likes of argos have been doing that phone up and collect thing for ages now... and their cheaper than woolies.
