Your death would mean nothing; you wouldn't break their organization or their spirit, you wouldn't turn the tide of the conflict, you wouldn't stop them from capturing and beheading more journalists, you wouldn't bring Islamic terrorists networks to their knees.

It's a moot point, anyway, because no matter how tough or stubborn someone thinks he is, if he has the normal sense of self-preservation, if he's any kind of survivor, he's going to take the option that keeps himself alive when he's staring down the barrel of a gun or feeling the edge of a knife on his throat.

It's so they can save face.. It's likely they figured out that if the journalists were killed, then it would bring even more negative response to their cause. So allowing them to claim they converted to Islam gives the tango's a easy way out that they can claim to have won.
