they are sitting in a stack on my shelves...like 10 of them, at least 800gb of dead ones

Vendzilla 08-29-2006 05:43 PM

Target practice!!!

Scott McD 08-29-2006 05:44 PM

I saw on the news the other night how people in the UK who had finished with their comps, and had intened on them being recyled, actually found out that their old comps were being shipped to Nigeria, and being sold for around £15 per hard drive, and all their information was being used ie : bank details and so on.

I smash mine to pieces...

pornguy 08-29-2006 05:46 PM

Smash them . And hit them with a big magnet

tony286 08-29-2006 05:47 PM

The Captain 08-29-2006 05:48 PM

Serge Litehead 08-29-2006 05:49 PM

minusonebit 08-29-2006 05:50 PM

I have a contract with Shred-It, they destory them using a technqiue that pulverizes them into little bitty bits.

Yep, this is very true. Our county always has these recycle "hazardious and electronic waste" drives where they take this old stuff for free, people drop off cell phones and everything else. Most people think this stuff is being actually recycled, what they dont know is that the county has a contract with a "disposal vendor" who does no such thing, they turn around and resell this stuff wholesale and also on eBay and stuff.

Vitasoy 08-29-2006 07:51 PM

I keep mine a my closet.

Spunky 08-29-2006 07:53 PM

I take them apart and use the magnets..one of the most powerful magnets around

Old Harddrives you say...

Well... I use my old harddrives for testing out linux and other misc things which I would not do on my main system...

I was hosting my own website PrismVoD.com on a old 2GB harddrive for a short time as a test project using Dynamic DNS !!! :upsidedow

But I find it make for a great night just to slam them into the floor full force... :evil-laug

Later,

KrisKross 08-29-2006 08:10 PM

I keep em in a pile. I have 200 MB drives lying around.

free4porn 08-29-2006 08:27 PM

GrouchyAdmin 08-29-2006 10:13 PM

Most are Maxxtor. They used to last about 6 years. Now they last about 9 months. They shred themselves. It's a feature, I tell ya!

evilclown 08-29-2006 10:18 PM

They do all our paper shreading, I didnt know they did hard drives too.

I take mine apart, keep the magnets,as someone said, hella strong. and the platters I used to take the angle grinder to, but lately I have been jsut bending them in half with a vice.

I like the coaster idea though, would go nice with the black leather couch, although they would be a bitch to keep shinny.

My CD/DVD's I jsut break in half inside a garbage bag so the bits dont make a mess everywhere.

woj 08-30-2006 12:02 AM

I put backups on them

Fizzgig 08-30-2006 12:05 AM

I'm saving mine; I'll take them in for data recovery someday.

Bro Media - BANNED FOR LIFE 08-30-2006 12:22 AM

Prod.Deity 08-30-2006 07:46 AM

I highly doubt it, but if you have access to Thermite, that'd be the best way.

It's a DOD certified way of destroying sensative data.

I smashed the fuck out of two 120GB hard drives. I'm sure if I still had them I'd do something not worth doing, so they got smashed.

bdld 08-30-2006 11:16 AM

i smash em with a hammer til its as flat as a pancake

majorbitch 08-30-2006 11:39 AM

in my closet.. sitting there. =( poor things.

Barefootsies 08-30-2006 12:27 PM

Pilled up in a stack somewhere in my office. I have used them in the past as temp back ups, etc. But since I now build myself a new computer every 12-18 months, they either move from PC to PC, or get put in a nice pile depending on the size.

I've cleaned/deleted/reformatted a few times. But once the time comes, they will probably be target practice. I do not trust some company to shread HD's, and while I do sell off older parts on eBay. HD's I never have, nor would.

:2 cents:

squishypimp 08-30-2006 12:28 PM

Shred It is a franchise. Some offer it, some dont. Mine happens to, but they have to take them back to the main plant to do it. So instead I take them to the plant and I insist on watching them destoryed in my prescence. I dont want them giving them to the government behind my back.

Deleting won't do any good, your entire hardrive contents can still be recovered.
