Why is reliable UPS so important for SEO...

A power loss could even bring MySpace down:

Article origin: La hosting providers slowed by power problems

Continuing power problems at a Los Angeles telecom building have caused more outages for hosting companies, who are working to reassure frustrated customers about the extended downtime.

The Garland Building (1200 W. 7th) lost power for the second time in five days last Friday, causing significant downtime for both Dreamhost and Media Temple. A July 24 outage at the building that knocked MySpace offline was subsequently blamed on malfuctions in a power transfer system and UPS unit. On July 28, the building suffered another loss of power, attributed to an electrical short.

The problems have been most acute for DreamHost, which has been struggling with network troubles in between outages. DreamHost, which hosts about 285,000 hostnames, provided a detailed summary of the problems in a blog post titled Anatomy of a(n Ongoing) Disaster.

For the rest of the text, check out the article here: La hosting providers slowed by power problems.

I didn't want to be malicious by quoting this article (accidents happen all the time), but if you are into any serious SEO (my main source of income), you should take care of your site's uptime.

Last time I've lost all of my search engine positions, due to couple of hours downtime (sites transfering between servers). I needed almost 3 weeks to get back... :(

Interesting read! Thanks!

Dreamhost's blog is very very very interesting to read. They have many good articles and some articles are very funny because they make fun of themselves as a company.

do you mean they are ironic or they are making mockery out of themselves? i've never read their blog, that's why i'm asking...

It's why I pay so much for a single extremely reliable server that I cannot afford to ever go down. Mirrored in the UK, Raid, multiple HD's, hot swapable everything, its one hell of a server that should never ever go down.

yeap... sometimes they even admit of overselling and misleading customers. Not sure if it's a good idea to admit to such things in public.

you are only doing backups or servers could swap in case one goes down?

Nice setup WiredGuy, is it the same hosting company ? is it IBM ? they have datacenters everywhere, mostly for govs and they dont usually take regular clients.

Marshal 08-30-2006 11:44 PM

It's Rackspace, not cheap at all, but they're really a mission critical host. $3.50/gig, yikes :winkwink:

Its worth it when you absolutely can't afford downtime...

This issue extends to hosting companies who don't realize that even 2-5 minute outages throughout the day (when they reboot servers/networks) can kill a site's SE ranks.

In addition to power backup, make sure your host offers reliable *web service* uptime - many that claim 99% uptime do not mean that your web pages will be accessible 99% of the time.
