Wordpress is a whore

Although I'm normally a huge fan of Wordpress I just HAD to share this with you all that think Wordpress isn't a resource hog

I had Wordpress installed on a dedicated box with 1GB of RAM and Wordpress was using 700MB of it, maxing out the RAM, then heading over to swap for ANOTHER 1GB and it still wanted more :Oh crap

The site was only at 10k/day average

I'm no longer a believer in the "Wordpress isn't a hog" cult

I removed Wordpress as the weapon of choice and now there's 800MB of free RAM :thumbsup

selective Anthony 09-01-2006 01:15 AM

Lol thats interesting, are you sure its like that for everyone? I have it installed on a couple sites, not even close to bein that bad for us. 4500/day avg last motnh, runnen strong!

GrouchyAdmin 09-01-2006 01:17 AM

That's not quite normal, even for wp. However, WordPress does have the highest amount of DB calls per CMS that I've ever seen - and that's WITHOUT additions.

But, yeah, WP is a whore.

so far this is the second box that Wordpress has gone ape shit on. The boxes are at different companies with different admins.

The only similarities between the 2 machines is that they both are running Debian

bknoob 09-01-2006 01:18 AM

I suggest you use a caching plugin i.e. WP-Cache: http://dev.wp-plugins.org/wiki/WP-Cache

It helped me tons when one of my pages got dugg to frontpage :thumbsup

WPCache won't work with gzip, despite being based on jpcache. You're just as well to make a static page daily, and redirect indrect root requests to it.

bknoob 09-01-2006 01:24 AM

Gotcha, it helped me personally so I figured I'd suggest. I guess your needs are a little different from mine :o

PimpDaddyPants 09-01-2006 01:31 AM

I have a blog script that works wonders with SE's

within the third day i get traffic from se's and google images

Zarathustra 09-01-2006 01:33 AM

you can write your own cache script spermy, then you'll be basiacally serving up html pages, 0 DB and your load will drop.

Love Sex 09-01-2006 02:01 AM

what are you using instead?

Tullian Zombie 09-01-2006 02:25 AM

I guess I'm lucky, not one problem with Wordpress acting like greedy whore here!

LiveDose 09-01-2006 02:42 AM

I love whores. They make me money.

Tuga 09-01-2006 02:47 AM

Basic_man 09-01-2006 04:20 AM

Techcrunch is using WP and they're probably serving up 100k pageview per day. They must have figured something out.

movabletype and joomla are both pretty good and I've not heard of people having resource issues with them

mrkris 10-04-2006 09:55 AM

joomla is generally overkill for most peoples needs.

webair 10-04-2006 10:01 AM

a bitch whore at that =)

yeah true but you're a n00b so stfu

dozey 10-04-2006 10:19 AM

last time I checked the db schema used by wordpress... it was horrid.. not even a hint of optimisation, wouldn't surprise me at all if it causes far more load / uses more time that necessary

killerkay 10-04-2006 10:21 AM

wordpress does truly suck.

Violetta 10-04-2006 10:24 AM

Not sure how to check how much ram it is using?!

jayeff 10-04-2006 10:43 AM

Frequently when WP is going crazy it is because someone is using wp-cache but doesn't have it installed properly. It then generates more work for the server than if it were not there. That probably applies to 8 out of 10 wp-cache installs I have looked at. As a rule, the cache directory doesn't exist, else it and/or the WP config file have the wrong permissions.

Otherwise, although WP has some of the sloppiest code I have seen for the way it makes database calls, the biggest issue seems to be how well the server is configured. Credit to my techies because I know very little about that end of things, but for 3+ years I have had multiple instances of WP and other reputed hogs running on very ordinary boxes without any problems.

what are you using?

woj 10-04-2006 12:09 PM

you must be doing something wrong, 10k/day on a standard wordpress install won't kill a server...
