My site has an alexa rank of less than 4000
What does that say about my traffic/hits, because I don't run a counter or server stats...

It depends on what kind of traffic you have... on a gallery run I started about a month ago my rank is 5,862 . That's about 200-300 000 uniques a day.

You'd know if it was 300k... that would mean a couple million hits a day to your galleries and you would definitly NOT be asking that question here right now.

If you have your own galleries on same domain, then its not hard to get a high rank, especially if you submit/link galleries other places. Whats your pageview/user ?
The rank itself does not tell how many surfers you have. Uniques is also relative on server stats because many surfers do not have static IP or disabled cookies etc in the browser. Thats why its measured and indicated with x per million with Alexa counter.

Server stats are far more accurate and don't come with the risk of a counter site being sold with the new owner 'editing' the javascript include to install some nasty things. Ask your host to install something like Analog.

All things being equal, it means you should be doing alright.

alexa is great - I bought an unranked site and put a tgp on it and pumped some shitend traffic at it (all asian) and it shot up and stayed at 5-6000 for 7months. Only cost $20/mo in traffic to get there.
The traffic was 100% unproductive, but just goes to show. It all depends on who has the alexa toolbar installed to get your rankings high.
