Here's a Macro Tip, since you have the 2.8 it will work great.

To shoot flowers (or anything) and make it look like there is a blue sky background, place the item on a pair of blue jeans.

Macro lenses are a lot of fun. One thing that I did was take a long zoom lens like my 70-200 2.8 and put on a teleconverter. Shoot small objects up close and you get a good DOF and the background is nicely out of focus.
