Warning ICANN madness - renewal fees for RedCross.org can raise to $1,000,000 or more
Some extremely important contracts regarding the Internet are being reviewed this Thursday, September 7th, 2006. These contracts would allow the monopolistic companies operating the .biz/.info/.org domain extensions to charge whatever price that they wanted.
The current contract negotiations do not include .com and .net, but VeriSign, the company that manages them supports these proposed agreements and are undoubtedly going to demand equal terms for .com and .net
A provision in these contracts is the equivalent of the energy commission granting regional monopolistic utilities indiscriminate rights to exploit consumers by raising the price of oil, gas and electricity. A strong possibility exists of variable pricing for different domains and could be viewed as extortion. Heavily trafficked sites such as RedCross.org or UnitedWay.org could be forced to pay exorbitant sums or risk losing their well-known domain names. Do you want your donations going to charity or to some greedy company?
If you own any websites or domain names, you should be deeply concerned that your next renewal fee may be much more than you expect or can afford to pay. As a webmaster, please link to the petition at http://www.BadForBusiness.org
