Today was the first time I got on a surf board... I had my ass handed to me.
 

So I stopped in Hawaii to meet up with Mr X from (Asia Bootleg DVDs) and he takes me out for a day in the waves.

Since I was a young punk ass kid I was on a skateboard. Then at 16 I started snowboarding and still do it every winter if I can. Not to toot my own horn but I was a bad ass skater and still am a very good snowboarder.

How hard could it be? And besides, it's a full moon tonight. I will rock!

2 hours in the water and I had my ass handed to me. I sliced open my hand, sliced my big toe and then another board bashed me in the mouth... cracked one tooth, chipped another. It's a good thing I was already on pain meds for the other tooth that was just pulled a few days ago.

Standing up was the hardest part for me. Going from laying, to standing quickly and not losing my balance... very hard. I think a few more days out there and I will be able to not break something.

It's like riding a bicycle for the first time - once you fall off, you never forget how to fall off. :winkwink:

But then you get better, just like skate boarding, and you learn to love riding waves. That is where the magic and the majesty take over...

I have never tried it but I bet its very hard, I have never been very good at skating or snow boarding, just haven't got the balance for it ...

I hope you have pics of all this because i'm having a hard time envisioning you on a surf boards.

hehe - I took a couple of 3 hour lessons, and could stand up. then came all the shit with teh local surfers etc and couldn't be bothered with it.

true surfers will think you're a wimp, but I find it more fun on a boogie board as escorpio says - you just lay on the thing with your fins on, a wave comes along, and off you go. They're made of soft stuff as well, not fibreglass, so they don't slice you open or break bits.

Bodyboarding was always a lot more fun for me.

Yeah, I should have pointed out that real surfers will laugh you out of the water. I don't care, it's fun without the suffering DWB went through!

damn dude u got fucked! i got beat up my first time, but only cuts and bruises. my buddy took me out to huntington beach. there was actually a surf competition going on at the time at one part. anyway, the hardest part for me was getting the fuck out there. the damn waves were vicious and kept crashing right on me as i paddled out. i got nowhere until i finally started getting the hang of it. i'm an athletic person and it was tough. the second hardest part was getting up. i got up a couple times that first time. the second time i went was twice as easy cuz it wasn't completely foreign to me and i had some idea of what to actually do.

There's the payoff :thumbsup Yea surfing is not easy though, kinda like snowboarding for the first time...

I've always wanted to surf but we don't have big enough waves here.

I remember that pain vividly.Years ago on my first trip to Hawaii I tried it on the north shore.After I finally figured out how to paddle it in a straight line and get out past the breakers.I sat on the board for quite a while watching these kids surf in..they made it look so easy.
I damn near drowned when I got sucked into the undertow.
