Yahoo's days are numbered!

I'm not saying that yahoo will cease to exist but I think they are going to be a non-player in the future. I don't really have a clear reason for this just a gut feeling based on what they are doing.

Yahoo fucked up when they started charging for inclusion into their directory. That was charging you to provide them with content. Their directory has all but died. It isn't worth shit to be included anymore.

Now they have a video section which hotlinks your fucking videos...of course I redirect to a pay site when the surfer clicks. But how stupid is this considering that they already had porn listings in the directory and all they had to do was accept gallery URLs and build the biggest TGP in the world.

Somehow I feel like these are moves of despiration from yahoo.

I think they fucked up Geocities. They shoud have left it as it was and just beefed up the services. The geocities "neighborhood" concept was a better approach.

Those companies that died in the "dot com bust" should start looking at things again. Bandwidth is at an all time low; new types and more surfers now; cheaper programmers available; more affiliate marketing and faster technology and better media tools. A company with some millions to spend could come in now with a solid approach and wipe yahoo off the map.
I think stuff like Utube and wikipedia are showing how to cut into the web market
and it's just a matter of time before somebody take yahoo on.

I think it's a good time to look for stock in upstart dot coms again.

msn is helping keep Yahoo alive , google has very few friends.

SmokeyTheBear 09-17-2006 10:27 AM

pr0 09-17-2006 10:29 AM

they def fucked up with the 5 gig limit on b/w.....

traffic coming to the site is worth more in advertising....than the $9.99 they hope to make off the owner for upgrading

martinsc 09-17-2006 10:30 AM

get of the drugs for a few hours....

jollyperv 09-17-2006 10:37 AM

I got tons of shit listed in yahoo and I didn't pay shit, and I'm talking new sites here. I didn't submit it either. Nor am I listed in Dmoz.

jollyperv 09-17-2006 10:43 AM

I don't think you know what the Yahoo "directory" is and thus prove my point of how they fucked it up.

You are listed in the "search results". So is everybody else's bullshit.

Look above the yahoo search input box and click on "directory".
The directory made yahoo what it is because it reviewed all the submissions and therefore had more relevent results than other search engines. Now they give you the same shit as every other search engine.

When a site was first put into the yahoo directory it would recieve 10k hits a day for a shit category listing. Do you get 10k a day when you get listed now?

I'm talking about pre 1999 Yahoo directory...

Yahoo actually used to use Google to return "web search" results.

Instead of paying google all that money they should have hireed more site submission reviews. They had the edge in the directory game but not anymore.

In contrast wikipedia has zeroed in on "relevent result" when you put a term in there you immeditely get a correct answer. All wiki needs to do to eclipse yahoo is to include web results under their normal stuff plus add more web services/entertainment to the site.

free4porn 09-17-2006 11:01 AM

i prefer yahoo to google!

Pleasurepays 09-17-2006 11:08 AM

google will always win. they are the only ones with a clear vision, that have always had a clear vision... and a clear vision that works. they are not trying to make money by "doing stuff" as others continue to try to do.

they make money by providing the best user experience possible with no compromises.

xxxice 09-17-2006 11:11 AM

These are all valid points. To all the haters did you even read what he had to say. I expected more from some of the people on this board.

Thanks for one of the best threads in a while :thumbsup

Manowar 09-17-2006 11:14 AM

that used to be the case, isnt anymore.. they dont provide search results just for the search results anymore.. they intentionally let the results slip on certain keywords to drive more traffic to adwords..

Yahoo is so much more than just a search engine. They offer more services than any other site.... email, IM, auctions, photo sharing, news, stores, etc... They could remove the search engine entirely and still live on.

xxxice 09-17-2006 11:20 AM

Guys please read at least; the first part of the post :)

Yup... Some of the biggest sites right now are owned by Yahoo.

Flickr, del.icio.us... etc.

mindoro 09-17-2006 11:27 AM

Yahoo can´t go to a non-player. There are too many services with great effect and no other one offer it like yahoo.

Services Like Yahoo Games, Messager and many more.

Greetings

What I mean by "non-player" is that the nightly prime time news will not give Yahoo stock quotes as a indication of internet power moves.

This is at least 5 years down the road; but time flys like a MoFo!

The internet will be just like everyother big biz. IBM used to be the desired PC but you can't even find them on a shelf now. Commadore 64? Can you say "play station" or XBOX!

Yahoo will still be around but they will not be the "leader" of the internet in 5 years...that I truly doubt.

In fact; the internet as we now know it will be challenged soon! I already know how it's going to happen, but I hope to get in on that deal so I'll keep my mouth shut on that subject.

Maybe for adult, but new mainstream sites have plenty to gain. Good PR for fast inclusion in the Google serps.

Can be accompished in a couple hours without Yahoo and for free. I don't agree with the OP but the directory isn't worth a flying fuck to anyone that knows what they are doing.

Google has few friends, and less competition. But you are not going to see Yahoo, or MSN, going anywhere. They will either hold, or continue to lose marketshare until a technology comes to boost it.

Correct. Plus they have their music offshoot, and are partnered with SBC/AT&T or whatever acronymn they are now. So they have money coming in from a lot of directions.

Same here. After the first site almost 10 years ago. I haven't proactively sent them shit since.

The problem here is that Google makes money along the line while continueing to be innovative, and work on perfecting the algo...

Yahoo thinks about money, and getting paid first and foremost. Keeping up, or maintaining is secondary. Two different schools of thought. Obviously Google's is better. People pay to be on there, or deal with them, because they are continueing to tweek. Yahoo hasn't done much in the past 5-10 years different.

:disgust

msan 09-17-2006 03:25 PM

I dunno but Yahoo's services are ok like webmails, groups, messenger. But as for their search engine, I never use it. I just use google.

donross 09-17-2006 10:02 PM

lets just see what happens next...

TheJimmy 09-17-2006 10:13 PM

Yahoo is fine but they do need to keep on their toes.

chaze 09-17-2006 10:17 PM

I agree they have about a 5 year shelf life before the stock practically dies.

We will see some new players soon though.

Maybe a buy it from MSN or Google will keep them alive but I would be surprised if either would buy it.

cheekycherry 09-20-2006 12:32 AM

I would have made this argument years ago when everybody switched their search over to Google.

However, they are still here and going strong against my better judgement, so who knows. They might surprise you.

No kidding, I remember how big Geocities was, mind you there wasn't much competition, but if they had the foresight to convert into a MySpace type format, there wouldn't be MySpace here today, hell it basically was already like that so it wasn't much of a jump.

It was cool having an "address" on the web, and the neat part was the specialized neighborhoods, alternative, gay, whatever. Was a rock solid idea, too bad to see it go to the generic crap fest as the web is now. I loved trolling through the "neighborhoods" looking at all the sites in some regions, you can't even begin to think about doing that today... and who would want to anyways. :2 cents:

Remind me to never consult you on SEO services. That is the most feeble minded response about Google I have ever seen on here to date. Did you seriously buy into their "do no evil" mantra? Yikes. They do plenty of evil, you just don't see it. :2 cents:

That about sums it up.

To the O.P., I am not sure how long you have been in this game, but from the read, I would say not long. Yahoo has been charging for inclusion for years. Same with some of the other shit you mention.

GeoShitties? You must be fucking kidding referencing that shit toots. They killed that shit back in late 90's, early 2000 when changed their TOS, and charging, among other things.

I am not saying they have not fallen, because they have in ISOLATED parts of their business model, such as their ad network, search, among some other things. However, Yahoo is a PORTAL not just some search engine any more.

Comparing them apples to apples to Google is pure comedy.

:2 cents:

pigman 11-06-2008 07:30 AM

Yahoo is inferior to Google.

gornyhuy 11-06-2008 07:31 AM

I hope they find a way to turn it around because their mainstream web services are generally superior and faster, and the license terms and APIs are generally better IMO than google.

I honestly can't remember the last time I used Yahoo to search for anything. However, I do end up on their page on most days for something or other..usually news. If I want to search I go to google.
