Gimme some feedback on DreamHost

Their shared plans seem too good to be true. =/

Are they worth it? :helpme

SD_KevinK 10-07-2006 11:05 AM

Hmmm..Im on DreamHost. Had some downtimes a few weeks ago, but now everything is working fine. I actually just noticed that they upgraded the virtual accounts yesterday night. 200 GB Space and 2000 GB bandwith per month. It increases for every week you stay there by 1 GB space and 16 GB bandwith.

My promocode is THEHOTTESTBODIES in case someone wants a $47 discount there.

Gillespie 10-07-2006 11:08 AM

I'm seeing a lot of threads on GFY with slow db connection times, frequent downtime, etc.

How bad is it exactly?

SD_KevinK 10-07-2006 11:13 AM

http://www.100dreamgirls.com is one of my sites on there. No probs with the db. Comus Thumbs and TTT each have one, also the other sites Im currently working on. I have no probs.

Few weeks ago on 2 days my sites were down for about an hour or an hour and a half, but since then nothing anymore.

More infos: http://www.dreamhoststatus.com/

How many dbs do you have? All of them MySQL? Size?

I'm really scared to move over there and turn out to be complete shit. lol

SD_KevinK 10-07-2006 11:28 AM

Im currently moving my stuff over there so I wont be much of a help. Maybe someone "big" can give you a better feedback. I only have 4 mysql databases (2x comus, 2x ttt) running atm. and am still building them up. Besides the downtimes I had I havent run into any probs with them yet. Got dreamhost suggested as I was having probs with comus on my other host. Price was just unbeatable lol.

Gillespie 10-07-2006 11:36 AM

Yeah, the prices seem like they were pulled off from a fairytale. It's just too good to be true.

I'm going over every single thread with the word 'dreamhost' in the topic over at Web Hosting Talk. There seems to be a lot of mixed emotions about it.

The constant seems to be that you cannot use them for critical stuff. If I get their cheapest plan I would get 200 GB storage and 1 TB of transfer per month. I can use it to push media and keep the critical stuff on a smaller VPS and save a shitload of money.

Gillespie 10-07-2006 11:40 AM

I just sent an email to them asking straight out: "What's the catch?" lol

SD_KevinK 10-07-2006 11:42 AM

The cheapest is 2 TB per month now. And it really increses every week with 16 GB, couldnt believe it myself untill I saw it in my stats.

Gillespie 10-07-2006 11:49 AM

Well, I'm done going over the threads at WHT. Most of them are "Dreamhost sucks" threads, but then I looked up my current host (www.jaguarpc.com) and they also have a bunch of threads like that.

JPC has been nothing but excellent to me. The only reason I'm even considering moving is because of the price. I'm even considering sticking with them in a VPS for everything critical and pull images and other media from the Dreamhost account.

So yeah, as you can see, it seems like every single host out there has "this compnay sucks" threads all over the Internet. I'm not sure if this is representantive when the time to consider a host comes around.

madmaxxx 10-07-2006 01:20 PM

Stay away of dreamhost if you want to do some serious business

mrkris 10-07-2006 01:31 PM

Not recommended if you want your sites to be up 99.9%

kaori 10-07-2006 01:43 PM

I moved away from dreamhost after a year...
most of the 'good dreamhost' stories comes attached with their ref codes...
I had frequent downtime and extremely slow databases..
good for 'personal' sites, but not business..

micker 10-07-2006 01:55 PM

ok, if you search on here, you'll see lots of people trashing dreamhost. they arent perfect, but no one is... They had some uptime issues last week, but they fixed it, and gave everyone 10x the storage space in return, went from 20 gigs on my plan to 200 gigs...

On my dreamhost account, I have 80 domains and 51 mysql databases. I have no real complaints. My only request to dreamhost would be to start supporting php includes and fopens by default, but if you have to have them, you can easily recompile your own php to run as a cgi and have whatever options you want.

hit me up on ICQ if you have any other questions, I've been with them for some time and can tell you anything you need to know.

Gillespie 10-07-2006 01:57 PM

Well, it's pretty clear that based on the stuff I've read it will not host anything important. Still, I'm looking for somewhere where I can just dump stuff in and forget about it. Plus, they have regular backups for free.

I can use it to stream audio, host pictures and videos, etc.

Sounds like an awesome deal to me and I can save on my server by switching to the smallest VPS since all the media will be with DreamHost.

Gillespie 10-07-2006 01:58 PM

Plus, it can be another resource to interlink without getting penalized by Google.

Juilan 10-07-2006 01:59 PM

Have been with them for 3 years, they say they have now fixed some of the essential probs. Uptime has been so far so good since that announcement. For big tgps and database stuff I would not reccomend them. For blogs, freesites and such they are cool for me.

KrisKross 10-07-2006 02:01 PM

Don't host with them. Especially nothing using PHP/MySQL. To make a profit, they have to overload their servers with customers. Consequently, server resources are low, scripts and databases are slow and the boxes crash all the time. If you're using scripts and databases and getting more than a 1K-2K hits a day, they'll close your account for using too much server resources.

Think about it like this... their cheapest plan is $7.95 for 2000 GB of bandwidth. That's .4 cents per GB. NO ONE, no matter how much bandwidth you buy, provides bandwidth for that cheap. Even Google and YouTube don't pay more than that for bandwidth. And that price does factor in discounts, affiliate commission, employees, server costs, etc.

Sign up for their cheap plan, try and push even close to 2 TB in a month and see what happens.

That's because 99% of their customers don't even come close to using 20 GBs of storage. So they can "up" everyone to 200 GB without increasing their costs. And people think they're doing something nice.

Say they put 25 people on one box. Imagine what would happen if all 25 people used 200 GB of storage at once.

I use my Dreamhost account for a couple of sites which don't matter and also for testing new sites before I upload them to more suitable hosts.

It's cheap, because it's not high quality. But I would recommend them for the reasons which I use them.

scotty2hotty1111 10-07-2006 02:11 PM

tried them twice. encountered alot of issues .

Doctor Dre 10-07-2006 02:14 PM

I've used them for 2 years for some sites ... Maybe 1 hour of downtime

promo code gofuckyourself will give you max discount.

rvincent 10-07-2006 02:16 PM

"If it seems too good to be true, it usually is."

Make yourself a favour and stay away from them.

That is called overselling. They pile several hundred customers on to 1 server and offer huge amounts of bandwidth because it makes the customer think "wow, I'm getting more!" when in reality 95% of their target market will never use even over 20 gigs a month. Offering 200 gigs for dollars a month would amount to just a few cents per gig, whereas my best bandwidth plan works out to about 15 cents a gig.

Doesn't matter any longer how much server resources you use. They stopped with that a few cpl of months ago :thumbsup

Gillespie 10-07-2006 02:38 PM

Yeah, the other thing is that almost all the stuff that seems like hell that I read is dated 2005.

I also read that they've changed several things and things *should* be working better now.

If anyone can link a webiste that uses PHP and MySQL (preferably with page generation time) that is hosted in a DH sever, it would be greatly appreciated.

Gillespie 10-07-2006 02:50 PM

Well, after seeing this, it is unlikey that I'll sign up for anything they offer.

http://www.dreamhost-sucks.com/category/horror-stories/

Also, I've been awaiting a reply from the SALES team for the past 5 hours and nothing. If the sales team doesn't reply, I can't even begin to think what the support department is.

Too bad.

Kind regards,

Too harsh?

What did they stop? Giving out server resources?

Imagine 50 users all using 2% of server resources. Ever see a server run stably at 100%?

And 50 users on a Dreamhost server is an extremely conservative estimate.

I believe DH is on the East Coast, so its Saturday 6PM there. I'm pretty on top of things but even I can't promise 5 hr. reply time on sales tickets. Support tickets are a different story, and thats what you should really be focusing on. See if they have a support email address listed on their site and send a message asking a technical question, see how long it takes to reply.

porn blogger 10-07-2006 03:07 PM

dreamhost is in california. and they suckle from the tit of depression. i had issues with them in the beginning, but i host alot of content there and havent had any problems... their control panel is crap though. :)

Yeah, the DC is in LA.

I'm GMT -2 right now, so it should be like 3:18pm over there. They had all morining to get to it.

I do a lot of research each time I'm out for a new host. I can't remember a time when sales emails took more than 2 hours to be back in my inbox, except the rare times I send my emails on Sunday.

chaze 10-07-2006 03:21 PM

Depends if you using the site business, then of course not. But for personal or just for the heck of it. :2 cents:

Can you elaborate on this? What kind of content? How many GBs? How's the speed?

Well, yeah, but at least I want to know that I'm not going to be cut off and probably banned, which voids my 97-day money back guarantee, because I used too many CPU seconds.

basschick 10-07-2006 03:35 PM

we had one site there that had downtime around once a month. since it wasn't an essential site, we left it. then we got another account there and started a mainstream board. we had downtime every other day - literally, not an exaggeration. it was disappointing as they had many features i liked and the support guys were nice.

too bad - i'd have happily paid more for better uptime.

k0nr4d 10-07-2006 03:36 PM

I've been using them for a while with no problems. A bit of downtime when i first started with them but nothign lately.

k0nr4d 10-07-2006 03:36 PM

edit: double post

pocketkangaroo 10-07-2006 03:37 PM

You get what you pay for. I wouldn't put anything important on it as they do have downtime frequently. But if it's just a shit site or two that you don't care about downtime, it's a good deal.

TG Rebecca 10-07-2006 05:12 PM

i have just a cheap plan there to dump personal stuff, pictures, couple pages, etc. basically nothing that matters if its down or really slow, which it is pretty often. i wouldnt put anything very important or anything you *need* to have up there.

Gillespie 10-07-2006 05:25 PM

I wonder if it can run Shoutcast and stream audio. It would be a hell of a use.

Gillespie 10-07-2006 10:37 PM

Shit, I can't believe I even considered using another host. Gotta love my Jaguar PC.

http://img152.imagevenue.com/loc584/..._122_584lo.jpg

Gillespie 10-20-2006 11:57 AM

I actually decided to test run it just now to see if I could push an audio stream through it.

Sign up was painless, untill I got an email saying that I had to print out some form, fill it up by hand and fax it over to them. My fax is b0rked and I had no plans on going out to search for one, so I cancelled. However, I did offer to send an 8 megapixel pic of the filled out form, complete with a pic of the credit card, but they needed a fax. Hell, print out an 8MP pic on an A4 paper and you have a lot more quality than a fax. Besides, didn't faxes die in like 1999?

What the fuck is all this 'fax this form to us' bullshit? Does it prove anything in case of a chargeback? A fax is even less traceable than email. Sheez...
