If you ask me, it's useful.

I must admit that I was getting pretty good at remembering the reply count with the other version...

it is useful, just too big...maybe there is another way to do it...

It just takes a while to get used to it. There could be alternative methods, like placing a small image next to the thread when there's a new reply, but that would be practically the same as having bold text. In fact, bold is the easiest way to read the thread title and notice that there's a new reply at the same time.
