sumphatpimp 10-10-2006 10:02 AM

everything starts in a garage.

Luc 10-10-2006 10:03 AM

actually, i don't know about that thing starting from a garage. they were blasted off with about $5 million in VC money so that helps quite a bit.

if you watch their videos, the ones taped and uploaded by the youtube staff at the youtube offices, you'll have a pretty good idea as to what kinda crowd it is.

the service was never meant to make any money. that's why it loses every month, that's why they have so much copyrighted contant, it was meant to be developed and sold, which they did pretty fucking well.

but, the VC money pushed it through. i think they burned through about $30 million total before this buyout.

The garage is key, look back Disney, Apple and Twin lab all started in garages. I think the reason is it works is its so crappy working in a garage it motivates you to work hard to get out of it lol.

Damian_Maxcash 10-10-2006 10:04 AM

The scary thing is I bet lots of people here have had ideas just as good, just most dont have the balls to do it.

or like me have a 10 second attention span - I have ideas and before DreamWeaver has even opened I have moved on to the next one.

I think it was 2 years :winkwink:

sumphatpimp 10-10-2006 10:12 AM

I don't think the idea is all that much.
its the backing and the advertising to make the site a household name.
got to push it till people are sick of it.

Yngwie 10-10-2006 10:13 AM

I'm gonna start the next big thing from my small tool shed - youthemustube.com

lol

working with VCs is like working for the devil, all they want is selling the company as soon as they see the chance to multiply their money

tranza 10-10-2006 10:26 AM

The same way many companies started, but they failed.

Don't ever fool yourself that having a great idea is all you need!

I've seen so many great ideas get slaughtered by late comming competition that was actuay quite shitty compared to the original idea. But the new commers got the market share, got the backing, got the press...etc...

With all the factors that have to fall into place for someone to "make it" these days, it's sad, but a reality that most would be better off just selling their idea for $5,000! At least they profit or break even at that point instead of investing more to just lose it all.

But, nevertheless....KEEP FUCKING TRYING!!!!!!!!
You gotta have balls. Lose your investment but keep your balls. :1orglaugh

thats true, but for YouTube this was a great move. the company hasnt seen a profit ever. these guys got in and out with a ton of cash. great idea to sell in my opinion.

dissipate 10-10-2006 02:07 PM

Speaking about garage motivation,i was been much productive when i had my computer in room where is hotter then outside and colder then outside when is winter. There is one of my hardest work in my own history which i ever do(i was 2 days almost without stoping translating one book from english to Croatian beacuse i had deadline). In this where i am now, somehow i am toolazy.Perhaps that is simply my subconsius act beacuse this room is sleep room so i maybe sabotage myself without knowing it.Btw that room which i talking is actualy loft where is stored things what is no longer used or useful. But for some reason it making me much productive. Also, i had party there last weekend, and i was much more active then last party which was in room what is down.Who knows maybe that have relation with feng shui.
Feng shui is science which define how house and items in house should be located.
