New car time... what should I get??

ok its time to get a new car, so when i get back from webmaster access LA i'm going to go shopping.

I've sort of got it down to about 4 cars that i am interested in.

a. Subaru WRX STI
b. Mitsubishi Lancer Evo 8
c. Honda s2000
d. Nissan 350z

all are around the similar price here

now i also have a little ski boat that i would like to tow aswell.. so thats leaning me to the wrx (but if i get a car that cant tow, then i just get a shitty tow car).... however as its summer here (always sunny and warm even in winter) i wouldnt mind the s2000 for the convertible and cause its 2 seater so i wouldnt have to be a taxi to friends :)

anyone one owned these cars at different times and can offer some comparison, pros/cons ??

Cheers, Matt :thumbsup

I *just* bought a 350z and I love it. It's the most fun of any car I've had. (I'm no huge car guy or a millionaire, but I did have a 330 convertible BMW once, and it's way more fun than that).

Pimpin_J 10-25-2006 02:47 AM

Another great option is also the CLS AMG :)

naughty_wld 10-25-2006 04:01 AM

a. Subaru WRX STI
I would definitely choose this one myself. It's more comfy than the Evo is. it's very good handable.
b. Mitsubishi Lancer Evo 8
This is best looking in my opinion. Altough it's really made as a WRC-car, so don't expect loads of comfortable options. The Subaru is more comfy like i said. That's something i would mind.
It's gearbox is quite tough, but all you americans drive automatics so that isnt what you wont mind. I dont know the speeds of subaru's automatic gearboxes.
c. Honda s2000
Definitely not my type of car. Honda has to make motorcycles no cars.
In my opintion it looks like Mazda's MX5 and i can tell you: you wouldnt like that.
I don't know how it drives, but noway better than the other cars you mentioned.
d. Nissan 350z
Looks really cool and it's a 2 seater. Looks really Asian but for this one: i like it.
It has a really great sound. I heard there's a big sub-woofer in the back of the seats you would mind when you have long legs.

Maybe you could have a look at the new Audi TT. It's German and looks great.
But maybe it will be sold like the previous version and you wouldnt like to see your car at every corner. Last TT was kind of Women car but I think the new one isnt.

Some addition: You sould take a look at Volkswagen's Golf R32, Audi's S3 or S4.. Really exthaunsing cars.
Good luck

hot hot cars..

imafuckingaussie 10-25-2006 05:05 AM

Yo Matt

Get a fully optioned commodore, they look pretty sweet (not usually a holden fan), or a new hsv or something. I would probably get a FPV Ford if I was loaded. Congrats on the ability to get a new one anyhow, what kind of stuff did u do to get the car, do you have a webmaster program?

dennisthemenace 10-25-2006 05:15 AM

Based on looks alone (since I have no direct experience with any of the cars you listed) I'd have to say the 350z

DjSap 10-25-2006 06:30 AM

350z because its a very sexy looking car...plus it is supposed to be very fun to drive...

Dont get the 350z, its not worth the price. Better to get the s2000 if your leaning towards rwd and plus it has the best resale value. Out of all four cars you mentionned, I would have to go withthe sti, simply because I like power and dont care much about the interior of the car as much. But thats me!

rodney25 10-25-2006 06:46 AM

Shit, lovely looking cars there. :thumbsup

Jeff aka NIGHTfall 10-25-2006 07:04 AM

you got 4 cars, and 2 different platforms, turbo AWD and NA RWD

soo...

AWD
STI > Evo
RWD
350z > S2k

yes im a nissan guy and would tell you the nissan is best out of them all, thats my preference, but you are looking to tow around things too, which the AWD sti would be the best for.

the sti is alot cooler and better made then the mitsu clone evo, but the evo is a badass car none the less.

the s2k is nice car, but its very small, and not as fast as you would think.

in my eyes, its a throw up between the STi and the 350z.

Z is soild, well handling car, looks great, and has one of the nicest exhaust notes for its class. not to mention, it got balls, i would say they are faster then the sti, but the STI will take a Z from the wholeshot (standstill) thanks to the awd.

good luck matt, hit me up on aim and ill tell you some more :)

ozmatt 10-25-2006 07:20 AM

cheers, jeff

i've always liked my hondas, and have wanted an s2000 since they came out, but its little impractical really.

I think the STI will be more useful with more room for people and stuff in the trunk, and has the power. There are just a shit load of WRX's on the roads here so resale value might not be so great, would be nice to get something not so common aswell...

matt

gangbangjoe 10-25-2006 07:26 AM

wtf is your problems guys?

he has a few cars on mind not being over 50k dollars and you come up with a m5 or cls 55 amg?

its like comparing apples and bananas

s9ann0 10-25-2006 07:29 AM

I can tell you pretty much that the s2000 is probably a bit slower, less practical and more dangerous than all of those cars but I'm sure its WAY more fun! I topped out a Z at about 148mph a few months back but I get ten times the buzz caining it around in my s2000! The s2000 0-60 is deceptively slow because it doesn't get going till 6000RPM, when its in VTEC I think its faster than the Z and it will keep up with scooby's. I never drove an EVO or a scooby but I can't imagine its as much fun as an s2000 or a Z for that matter unless you are actualy doing a rally or something!

I would go testdrive and s2000, you can rent Z's from hertz

Lensman 10-25-2006 07:38 AM

BMW 335i is not much more.

Psycho_x 10-25-2006 07:42 AM

Finally a question I can answer .Imports are my profession. All 4 are great choices. If you want something stock to just drive daily without any upgrades the S2000 and the WRX are great cars but take a 350Z and about 5 thousnd extra and you'll have a rocket but if you have a family the EVO is all around the way to go.Take an EVO throw in an extra 5 or 6K and youll have a dream car.I have a friend I use to race with that has an EVO he drives it to the track changes his front tires and can run low elevens in a quarter mile and being able to do that in a 4door sedan is fucking nuts

Have you looked into the Infiniti G35 coupe? I think it's a much better ride than the 350 because it has the back seat option (not very comfortable but at least the option is there)

here is the run down for the USDM evo's.

03 and 04's have been known to have transfer case issues. most of these have been fixed by this point. the 05 does not have these issues. the clutches however, are kind of weak. not really a problem if you don't plan on racing your car all the time like i do though.

my stock clutch is fried right now at only 16k miles. but i have been to the drag strip a number of times, as well a the autocross, and of course lots of spirited daily driving.

if you're not going to be racing it shouldn't really be an issue though.

aside from that, the only problem i have had with mine was a strange noise coming from the fron suspension. turns out the strut mount bearings were broken and needed replaced. it was a 70 dollar part, but was all fixed free of charge under the warranty.

other than that i can't really say anything bad about my evo. it's been a joy to drve and to own.

oh, maintanence is a little exspensive. you have to buy better quality gas, i usually use 93 octane. but you can also use 91 and 92. tires can get a bit pricey, brake pads as well. but i still have a ton of life left on my stock brake pads, even after some decent racing. oil changes are a little pricey too because you need to use a full synthetic, and they reccomend mobil 1.

but honestly, these the maintanence costs are something you're going to run into with just about every car on your list. it's not outrageous or anything for the type of car that it is.

ultimately i think you should test drive one of each and decide which one fits your driving style the best. i never got past test driiving the evo. i sat down, let the clutch play out, and was sold before i was out of first gear.

the steering is amazingly nuetral. the car goes exactley where you point it. the power is ample and comes on quickly, and the all wheel drive is amazing.

i love watching fwd and rwd rip apart tire off the line at the drag strip, then i can just ignore the water pit, pull up to the line, and take off like a rocket ship without so much as a chirp from any tire. :)

CunningStunt 10-25-2006 05:45 PM

I just bought a WRX a few months ago - fast as f*ck.

Wouldn't want to tow anything with it though - so would advise to get an Evo - wicked fun cars to drive. S2000's are hairdressers cars and look dated already.

wedouglas 10-25-2006 06:07 PM

Quit bragging. No one cares that you have one. It's not even the top of the line one.

Turns out to be US$66,610 and US$72,425.. I live in The Netherlands..

I like the exhaust pipes of the 335i: they are Audi style..But i don't like the 3-er in general. It's too much a family car.

EDIT: And i do not like it since i really looks like a Merc:http://www.autoweek.nl/images/800/7/...e73a836b17.jpg
