How does it compare with perl and SSI commands as far as dynamic pages? I know I can do lots with
[!--#exec cmd='whatever' --] or the cgi one, is PHP better? |
From your signature:
__________________ [an error occurred while processing this directive] You sure you can do a lot with SSI? :) I think PHP is much better for dynamic content , but it really depends on the situation you are speaking of. Each case is different, but in most cases when you compare PHP to SSI php is much more robust. -AJ |
I like Perl, but I like Php even better. You can run it on any Unix or Windows platform and there are a ton of free scripts available to you on the web. Check out www.php.net

PHP is great for webdev, you should definetly try it
|
as far as I know CGI normally uses a lot more ressources than PHP does...

Depends on what you are doing wether it uses more resources. mod_perl for apache runs perl scripts faster than PHP in most occurrences. However, PHP is usually easier to build cross platform and cross database apps using things like PEAR, classes and database abstraction layers. I personally like PHP for most web apps, so I am a little partial to it.

Each have their advantages. PHP is LOTS easier to learn than Perl so there are probably more people using it by now (mostly newbies writing really nasty code). I definitely wouldn't call PHP a better language though. I personally use PHP for simple tasks. For anything even kind of advanced, I stick to Perl.

I'm gonna have to throw the props to Rasmus Lerdorf, Zeev Suraski, and Andi Gutmans for creating such a fine product. Just because I know they always wanted their names to show up on a porno-messageboard.
I've been coding in PHP since it was called PHP/FI. Back then it wasn't much of a language. Now days, if you want to do web development, it's the way to go. MySQL is also your friend. |
