windows bootup and external drives + devices _ QUESTION!

When I unplug my external hard drives and take my laptop somewhere....

When I bootup windows.... I login and it goes real real real slow bringing up windows.

If I shut it down then... and reboot it...it will reboot fine...over and over

Until I plug the externals back in....

And then its all extremely slow again.

Anyone have a clue?

hmm not sure, but you could check your IDE/SATA units (control panel > system > devices), and check that your drive isnt running in "PIO" or "DMA" mode. If its in PIO the whole system will be painfully slow, and moving 5megs would take 3 minutes..:)

sounds like a really weird problem

I have a weird problem, not really like yours, but dealing with external hd's. If I leave an external hd hooked up to my computer (usb 2.0) and restart, it'll give me an error everytime, even if the external HD is blank. I have to unplug it for windows to start, then plug it back in after windows has booted up. The only 'slow-down' experiences like that I have gotten is what chupachups suggested but that was eons ago with a old 6 gig 5400 rpm drive.

Before disconnecting your drive from USB make sure to use "safely remove hardware" feature
