Do you feel that a raise in the USA minimum wage will increase sales?

They are talking about raising the minimum wage to $7.15
I'm overjoyed about it because they say that the current minimum wage has the weakest buying power in many many years. But also I think this will have a positive affect on sales. Now clearly I'm talking less than a 5% bump, but a bump none the less.

WiredGuy 11-18-2006 10:35 PM

That means most of GFY will have more money now... LOL

Economy 101 NO! Good way to fuck things up.

Lets see basic flow of things.

Manufactures have to pay more money to make their product, resellers need to pay more to sell that product.

People who just got paid more have to PAY MORE for everything they need. Vicious circle no?

MyNameIsNobody 11-18-2006 11:08 PM

Stickyfingerz is right.. everything will follow the raise

Kimo 11-18-2006 11:10 PM

I dont see it doing much for sales.

I have reason to believe people who work minium wage jobs are highly unlikely to buy porn.

AllStar 11-19-2006 12:26 AM

If they raise minimum wage then they will hire less people and just hire illegals or outsource more.

So unless you have a latina or indian site your shit out of luck.

It's a Catch-22 situation. Raise the wages, raise the prices on everything and fire people.

Better to stop waste and spending by irresponsible people.

Prices barely raise if at all and typically very few people get fired. Been tested over and over again in states that have said Fuck You to the Federal minimum wage which is a fucking joke.

Doctor Dre 11-19-2006 01:03 AM

1st of all, you are only talking about US sales there.
2nd : If cost of employes go up, the rest will follow and the price will be passed on the customer.

spunkmaster 11-19-2006 01:06 AM

$7.25 per hour workers don't normally have credit cards !

So the answer is NO !

At a Federal level of 5.15 an hour, what the fuck do you mean on stopping waste and spending by irresponsible people?

Lets assume they pull 40 hours a week. That's only 206.00 per week, 824.00 per month, and 9888.00 per year. Before taxes and other with holdings.

Hmm maybe food, shelter, heat, and running water is some of that irresponsible spending and waste eh?

I guess the good news is that the Federal Government has eliminated hunger in the US. All that they needed to do was remove the word hunger from all reports and swap it for low food security or something.

The Ghost 11-19-2006 01:08 AM

NO, it will not increase sales.

baddog 11-19-2006 01:10 AM

You think people making minimum wage are not buying porn but suddenly will if they are making $7.15/hr?

kane 11-19-2006 01:17 AM

There is a huge misconception about an increase in the minimum wage increasing the costs of goods and services. It can be true, but most of the time it is not. In most cases the cost of a good/service is driven by the tolerance of the consumers and the presence of competition. Say for example an item sells like crazy at $39 and the manufacturer makes $8 profit on it. The minimum wage goes up and it causes the cost of manufacturing that item to go up and the profit on it drops to $6.50. So they raise the price to $42. It doesn't sell so well because a competitor comes in and sells theirs for $39. They would rather sell more and make less per item. This causes the first company to have to take a little less profit and lower their price to compete. They are still making a nice profit, just not as much.

But this example isn't 100% accurate because in the modern age with the WTO, NAFTA and an ever globalizing economy most of the consumer goods are now made overseas and shipped into this country and those that are not are typically made by people who make over the minimum wage so the increase won't affect them. Most people that work for those ultra low paying jobs do so in service industries like fast food and low end retail or in low end labor jobs. The increase in the minimum wage for them will have very little impact on the overall cost of a product.

In the end I think it's good for the economy. Typically people that make low wages are spenders. If you raise the minimum wage $2 an hour you are putting an extra $160 a month into thier hands. You know they won't save it, they will spend it and spending money helps grow the economy.

How much is the US min wage right now? $5 ish?

Shit.. even if it is increased to $7, that is prob the lowest min wage in any western country. Australia is over $10, UK $9.60, France $10.50 ish.

This is true. My state has a state wide minimum wage that is around $7 per hour ( I think) and stuff doesn't cost any more or less than it does elsewhere.

Possibly, in a reverse domino effect upwards.....graduating seniors and college students making more coin for extra spending money and their parents (Dad) not having to give them extra for their free time away from home could equal an increase in sales if you see the cup half-full :2 cents:

Nah... I suspect anyone making that would still be using dial-up and almost all porn companies have walked away from that money (and then talk about decreased revenue, saturation etc.) with their hi BW sites and content.

this is a very, very good point.. there is still a lot of people out there on dialup.

After Shock Media 11-19-2006 05:28 AM

If and when you do see a minimum wage increase it will not all come at once, that is almost a certain. They will phase that shit in over a period of time like they normally do. Then again they could just jump it up but I find that unlikely as they would not want to piss everyone off at once.

However I do not feel this would attribute to additional sales either way. Sure some may be able to spend a little more on debit cards, however most of those people are more savvy and understand the buy, cancel, then enter site routine. They are keen enough to maximise the money they do have, and with broadband as cheap as it is most again already have that too. So I would really expect to see a lot more one time purchases and quick cancels.

I do feel though that interest rates have a higher influence on sales and sign ups. The card companies are letting out a little less candy cards to college students right now or at least those that they do have near maximum interest rates attached. When the bills roll in they quickly see what they can drop, weasel out of and so forth as they attempt to make minimum monthly payments. Interest builds even more on such cards and alas even those who wanted to re-bill or forgot to cancel end up declined for being over limit.

Lastly we are still in the entertainment business so to speak. Right now we have our dollars competing against the dollars spent on the latest gaming systems and of course holiday gifts. Knocking out holiday gifts is one thing but a good portion of our target audience demographic also falls smack in the middle of the game system demographics as well. When it comes down to it they either can get their game fix and be cool by dropping 600-900 bucks on a system not including accessories, or they can buy some porn. I can easily see them more temporarily attached to the games and when the need for spanking material is required they will of course get off on the free bee's since there is always more than enough. Not to mention a new game costs a wee bit more than a monthly subscription and well they need to amass a collection of games for now, until of course they can find a way to share them for free and then they may be more inclined to spend a few bucks on smut.

Just my 2 cents though.

Damn thats where you got me.....Interest eats cash and anything extra made wont go towards credit....but your wrong about the gaming side of it....8-9 months of Must have Everything , then at least 2-3 years till it happens again

How cheap are you getting it for?? I'm paying about $40 a month up here and I don't see many people making minimum wage shelling out for that when they can get dial-up (with promises of higher speeds) for $10.

nadanada 11-19-2006 09:52 PM

i'm not opposed to raising the minimum wage if it doesn't effect unions. such a small percentage of the US works for min wage that it would hardly be effective to most goods and services.

on the other hand i don't respect anyone over 18 that works for min wage, bitches about it, and doesn't make the effort to improve their financial position. even the people that camped out for ps3's to make an extra buck took more initiative than most of the tards working for 5.15 ever will.

HeadPimp 11-19-2006 10:19 PM

Minimum wage is a joke. No one with any sort of skills makes minimum wage.
Personally I think we ought to just do away with it. Realistically if you can't produce $5 and hour in goods/services why should you get paid for it? What are we, socialists?

I doubt it would make a bit of difference in sales..

EBORG9 11-19-2006 10:31 PM

Yeah. Sales of Malt Liquor and Lottery tickets.
Who over the age of 18 can live on min wage?

Maybe by the time this post loads it'll be $9.

Part of the reasoning for a minimum wage (not just in the US) is to cover scenarios of abuse. Sure.. in the past it was unions who pressed for standards in various industries, but generally that's disappearing.

In several industries abuse is commonplace - eg hotels and catering. A few would employ slaves if they thought it could be "legal" and acceptable. Employees in a few industries get sacked if they dare ask for a raise above the legal limit - and it's not because they are not contributing or "bad" employees. (Sure, the sacking is done to keep it legal - usually.)

The proposed increase to $7 ish is not an achievement - $7 is still lower than most industrialized western countries.

True. Clinton really fucked the economy up when he raised the minimum wage in 1997 :1orglaugh

reynold 11-20-2006 07:40 AM

I could say there'll be a possibility of increasing the sale.

TheDoc 11-20-2006 07:55 AM

Humm.. As a high school student I made more than minimum wage. Before the Marines, I was making 8-12 an hour, after I was making 18-25 an hour.

Minimum wage is a joke most people already get paid more than minimum wage, even fast food places start you out above minimum wage.

Not sure how accurate it is, but I have heard many union contracts are written such that the employee gets X times the minimum wage. These people don't have a hardcoded hourly rate, its 3 or 4 times minimum wage or whatever.

Whenever the minimum wage is increased, they get automatic raises.

For people over 21 I think the UK is more like $11 an hour. Not sure but the last time I had a normal job when I was in college I was getting paid $9 an hour. That was 5 years ago now.

Sosa 11-20-2006 08:30 AM

they will buy porn no matter what, $2/hour raise won't change anything except jack up prices on other things that we all buy.

Project-Shadow 11-20-2006 09:45 AM

It should do, even a minor bump in pay gives people the conception that they are earning a substantial amount more.. and spend in accordance to it. Yeah sure the higher ups will be paying out more, but average joe 12 pack will spend more on crap he doesn't need.
