BMW wants $800 to install my ipod

BMW has a new software update which allows me to dock my ipod in the glove box and see my playlists on the nav screen. + I get full control over the unit with my steering wheel.

Seems like a ton of money to spend (I could buy 2 ipods for that here). On the other hand having full access to those features is pretty cool.

I made my appointment for Monday. Go ahead and tell me I am an idiot, I can take it.

Chris 11-20-2006 08:44 AM

that would be pretty sweet
thought it would just be a docking station that you controled from the radio
but if you got control from the steering wheel with on screen playlist control and the ipod is not in your way
800 well worth it if you got the cash

boys love their toys ;)

Brad Gosse 11-20-2006 08:47 AM

Here is a video on how it works. Pretty slick IMO. I think I "may" get Sirrius with this update as well.

There's no aftermarket vendors who can do the installation for cheaper for you?

Jman 11-20-2006 08:52 AM

You're not an idiot, you just more successfull then 90% of the GFY'ers ;-)

Well the software update comes from BMW directly. I wouldn't want to have some audio place messing with my nav system etc.

My car audio guy said all of the aftermarket solutions require your ipod to be controlled manually and u can't see the playlists on screen.

I have an aux audio port which handles my ipod already. I just hate having to take my eyes off the road to control it.

Pipecrew 11-20-2006 09:02 AM

It's a rip off, I did mine the aftermarket way and hooked it up to my touch screen navigation. Needed to buy 1 adapter and it cost me 100 USD. My steering wheel controls dont work on it, but its touch screen and I like that a lot.

Depends, do you have the GPS that came with BMW or would you want a nice aftermarket one to hook up your ipod to? The whole project might cost you like 1000, couple hundred more then the ipod hookup, but you get, Touchscreen navigation, dvd player, mp3 player, backup camera.

I already have all the toys loaded on the BMW, GPS and all. So as good as that sounds it would be overkill. + I really don't want my ipod visible in the car.

I will have to take some pictures of my setup, it still goes through the glovebox. But if you have the BMW nav, might as well just do it your way. I was under the impression the Ipod software/update was only 400 with the cables etc.

What sucks, is that anytime someone breaks into your car, they go through the glovebox anyways, locked or not. So either way I am going to be out a 60gb ipod.

I would love to see those pics. I think my dealer is overcharging because they have only done this once on an M6 last week. It took them all day because the software takes 4 hours to DL into the car.

I checked with a few other dealers and the price is the same.

The above pic is the only one i could find on my computer, i dont know what i named the others.

Here is a guy that installed the same GPS i have in his car, he also has the ipod attachment. I just like it cause once its closed and you take the faceplate, it looks like a very basic deck, nobody is going to bother to steal your shit.

If you are close to the US border, you should maybee drive over and have them do it for you.

149 + 2 hours installation.

Thats because his install was on the car without Nav. I was told it costs more to update the nav computer.

Fluid 11-20-2006 09:44 AM

I cheaped out on my bmw when they told me the price, and bought one of those little fm broadcaster units that also charges my ipod while I drive. It's a pain to control, but I can unplug it easily and carry it with me when I leave the car.

Jenny S. 11-20-2006 09:58 AM

all 2005 and up bikmmers do that just by plugging a harness into a wire that's already in teh glove box (plug & play) but it's possible to rewire older models 2002 and up.

if you have money for that do it....

FuqALot 11-20-2006 10:06 AM

if you want to do it yourself, it's possible.

this is what i did with a 330ci.

you buy a dicepod module. then you install the dicepod instead of the cd changer. and you're done. you are able to use the steering wheel and stuff. i left the ipod in the trunk becos there's no reason why you would have to put it with your handgloves. but if you want, it's possible to route it to the handgloves.

greeting.

andrej_NDC 11-20-2006 10:17 AM

$800 is not that much if you use it often. I'm converting my CDs to 1 big DVD with MP3s and thats enough sound for me. I can get about 1000 songs on one DVD.

Peaches 11-20-2006 10:49 AM

I just use the satellite radio in my car or cds. I'm so boring :(

Ace_luffy 11-20-2006 11:02 AM
