My daughter is on her way to boot camp

Today the recruiter will pick up my daughter and head off to great lakes for basic training. She's set up to take a couple tests to see what she'll be doing, she scored high on the asvab test, so she's hopeing for linguistics with her second choice being Aircraft tech. Depends on the test score of the next test she takes. I have mixed feelings about this, I mean I've raised her myself with some help along the way from family, she's a good kid, always got good grades and knows how to stand her ground, it will be interesting to see how the military will change her. Of course she can already shoot a rifle!
She will be third generation Navy, My dad served on the USS Los Angeles, not sure what kind of ship is was, I served on a submarine as a sonar tech, I did 2 west pacs and got a expeditionary medal and several ribbons for different things.
We're close and I hope that it stays that way, relationships between parents and their kids has changed over the years, my daughter gave me her MySpace login so that I can update it during her stay in boot.

She has a GFY hoodie to keep her warm till she gets to boot!

Furious_Female 11-28-2006 09:55 AM

All the best to her :thumbsup

Rochard 11-28-2006 09:59 AM

Third generation US Navy? That's very impressive!

You must be so proud. She's about to change in a big way.

iamkathi 11-28-2006 10:02 AM

Best of luck to your daughter. I am sure she will do fantastic and make you really proud. My husbands' best friend's daughter( follow that?) graduated from Marine Boot camp last year. They all live in WA. so I drove down for the ceremonies. It was really incredible to see the difference in this 18 yr old.

It sounds as if you did a great job in raising her.

Keep us all informed as to her progress. :thumbsup

Anthony 11-28-2006 10:08 AM

I just saw Great Lakes, and I knew it was Navy.

Good luck to your daughter, hope she gets the linguistics. Monterey is a nice cushy place to go get advanced training at. :)

4Man 11-28-2006 10:10 AM

I wish that she have a lot of fun there.

Actually the recruiter thought it was funny and she's proud of where her Daddy works

Stephen 11-28-2006 10:24 AM

RIGHT ON M!

That's super-cool, I know she must be really excited -- course, I'm not too sure I'd rather spend the winter up on the great lakes instead of in Sacramento...

I hope you'll bring her by when she comes home :thumbsup

Donny 11-28-2006 10:49 AM

I don't envy her going to Great Lakes in the middle of winter. I was fortunate enough to go to Orlando, Florida when I joined the Navy. I heard horror stories about Great Lakes in winter. Brrrrrr....

But I guess more adversity results in an even bigger sense of achievement when she gets through it. Good luck to her.

Sosa 11-28-2006 10:59 AM

good luck to her.

Z 11-28-2006 11:20 AM

While I really respect her decision to be 3rd generation Navy, as a Marine myself...I just have to throw in a dig that she really should be off to Parris Island. But hey...not everybody can be a Marine, right?

Seriously, congratulations to her and to you. Only the second time I'd ever seen my Father cry was the day he watched the van pull away on my way to Parris Island.

We both have the greatest respect fo anyone in any service, the marines and the navy being the deepest in tradition, yes I know what the bloodline on your pants meant! I just offered some fatherly advice and reminded her that part of the marines uniform was a kevlar vest and helmit and Navy bases always have beaches near by, I was home ported in pearl harbor. so you see the descision was clear. SEMPER FI!

Congradulations and best wishes

When were you in Donny? I was in 88-92 CTR3 unfrocked 2.

dad0n 11-28-2006 11:49 AM

She will do well...:thumbsup

Peaches 11-28-2006 12:00 PM

Best of luck to her, V. The night I took my son to basic, I cried all the way home, and forgot to shut my sunroof. I didn't use the car for the next three day - after 6 inches of rain. I was a mess that night!

Just a downer here based on personal experience, if she EVER, EVER tells you she's unhappy there, refer her to the chaplain. It's 24/7 and they (chaplains) can't say anything to the Navy about the visits. I think if my son knew this, he'd still be here today - IMO.

WhiplashDug 11-28-2006 12:00 PM

Hooorah! We love to see another squid on this rock!
Congrats to Vendzilla! He done his job!

Best of luck lil lady! Go put foot-to-ass for your country!

HAPPYPEEKERS 11-28-2006 12:00 PM

I wish her the very very best!!

BAKO 11-28-2006 12:01 PM

Good Luck to her :)

dissipate 11-28-2006 12:05 PM

Before I start with the jokes about female squids... rochard probably knows them just as well as i do from being a former marine also....

Congrats to her. Sonar tech eh? I would have gone batshit on a sub.... it was bad enough sitting my ass on a ship during a westpac.... getting sent to iraq atleast made things interesting.

rob34 11-28-2006 12:06 PM

Basic Training

Dont worry too much about your daughter,She will be fine. I went through Army Basic in Ft. Benning. It was one of the best things I have ever done. They will teach her alot of useful things along the way.

I remember when that happened, that must have been tough. My daughter is a very strong person and she's a survivor. She would probably call me rather than talk to a chaplain, we have a pretty good thing going between us!

Being on a sub isn't for everyone, talk to the old guys from the days of diesel subs in WW2, they had balls that clacked!

czarina 11-28-2006 12:17 PM

congratulations! I hope she has fun and does good... and does NOT get sent to Irak.
By the way, WOW, you must be older than I thought!

Wiggles 11-28-2006 12:20 PM

best of luck to her, not interested in the slightest in military life, but to each their own.

Wouldn't it be better to advise to go to talk to a psychiatrist than a chaplin? Most religious people I have known would be very poor counselors.

Kimo 11-28-2006 08:37 PM

best of luck to her :)

shekinah 11-28-2006 08:56 PM

Good luck to her, hope she'll enjoy:)

Dagwolf 11-28-2006 09:18 PM

You know what this means, right????

You're old. :(

Then again, a lot of us are.

Belinda 11-28-2006 09:20 PM

Awsome for her!!! Hope you aren't to lonely without her.

Xplicit 11-28-2006 10:03 PM

Joining the military is honorable, but stupid until Bush is out of office. Unfortunately he thinks of people like your daughter as expendable.

Zuzana Designs 11-28-2006 10:16 PM

I was in the Army and remember that fine day :) I wish her luck ;)

rounders 11-28-2006 10:24 PM

hahah interesting gfy style..:P

GetBigCash 11-29-2006 12:17 AM

Good luck to her!

TheJimmy 11-29-2006 12:45 AM

Best of luck to her!

Crossing my fingers for her first choice... linguistics is awesome, but sometimes boring as hell, had some buddies in that field... Also knew quite a few aircraft techs... both great career fields

:thumbsup
