Best War Movies
This is a list i put together considering different period in time and different wars
Saving Private Ryan (1998) Three Kings (1999) Apocalypse Now (1979) The Longest Day (1962) A Bridge Too Far (1977) Tora! Tora! Tora! (1970) Casablanca (1942) Summer of '42 (1971) Platoon (1986) Black Hawk Down (2001) |
Deer Hunter
All quiet on the Western Front Glory The Patriot Although it wasn't the best war movie, I think Jarhead was the most real depiction of Military life. |
Monty Python's The Holy Grail - I think it was during a time of war.
|
Id add Glory to that list.
|
I voted for TORA TORA TORA!
today 2 TV stations are showing that movie, perfect timing |
The Big Red One
|
Saving Private Ryan was an amazing and insightful movie.
|
what about Braveheart!!!
i voted Apacalypse Now & Platoon |
I like airplanes and aviation movies, another movie to mention in that line would be Memphis Belle, the best aerial combat scenes.

Also about Perl Harbor and Soldger Jane.
|
I never liked to watch war movies until I saw Saving Private Ryan. I found myself captivated by the fact that young men were put in those positions and had to deal with it.
Now when I got to Blockbuster I get a new release and a free movie. I've been picking up all those old war movies I'd passed on before. Last night I watched Platoon and I've got Brave Heart on the table. Right now my vote goes to Saving private Ryan. Great story line in a well produced movie. |

my parents took me to see tora tora tora when I was 7 yrs old . God im old lol
|
All those movies are great! My top two are Saving Private Ryan and Black Hawk Down.
|
I miss there for example Full Metal Jacket or Paths Of Glory, voted for Apocalypse Now and Platoon.
My all time most favourite war movies as war as war books are the german ones - no patriotic or communist shit and no fairy tales: Stalingrad (1993) - like if someone kicked you in balls Das Boot (1981) - I recommend the Director's cut that is nearly four hours long, but you won't breathe Sorry, Saving Private Ryan is a sweet patriotic fairy tale, nothing against mr. Hanks or mr. Spielberg, but it's exactly the thing suited for the US audience. The only good thing the movie did is that the young assess know that there was ever a World War II, thanks for that. |
Jarhead
. |
I liked Platoon best.
|
When we were soldiers.
And how could you forget "Paton"... George C. Scott...C'Mon"! |
Moxxx you need to redo this thread and add Paths of Glory and Full Metal Jacket to your poll.
|
To me the war films that I enjoy the most are the ones where the war is more of a character..a backdrop...rather than the battlefield stuff
|
Longest day and Bridge too far are classics.
All Quiet on the Western front and Das Boot are good to involve you on the flip side of your thinking, as an Englishman in my case. Platoon and Saving Private Ryan are great for making you realise what it is actually like without the Hollywood glory. I also love Apocalypse now, Hamburger Hill and Bridge over the River Kwai. Hard to choose 1 or 2.... |
It's hard to beat Apocalypse Now when it comes to gritty realism.
|
Bridge over the River Kwai has to be the first serious warm film I saw as a kid and it gets better the older I am and the more I understand the world
|
You left out the ONLY TRUE military movie, "We Were Soldiers." How do I know? I was there! On the knoll. All the rest you've listed are mere hollywood immitations. Platoon came to the closest to reality in your list.
|
Platoon starring Charlie Sheen is amazing...
|
saving private ryan and apocalypse now
|
Full Metal Jacket
|
Left out "A Thin Red Line"
Fucking awesome war flick. |
