GFY cat owners: cat in Xmas tree problem..help!
I've tried everything from a squirting a water gun at him, to going to Petco last night to buy a repellent but not only does it work, but the smell from the repellent is making me wanna gag! :Oh crap I have to spray air freshener and burn scented candles to get the funky smell out.
Anyways, is there any trick to keeping my cat out of the Christmas Tree??? I bought Bitter Apple Spray and that seems to be working on the lights...I have went through 3 sets of lights on tree because he keeps bitting the bulbs off. :helpme :helpme :helpme |

Many years we've had trees fall over because of our kitties. Is this a kitten???
Ours out grew it because we had them altered and now they are lard laying on the couch 24/7. But...we used the water bottle. I've heard that spraying perfume on the tree will keep them off. Tin foil all around the base of the tree. They hate tinfoil. Or plastic bags.. If they are chewing on the lights.. put a bit of dish soap on them.. or bitter apple. Cat boundry spray around the perimeter of the tree. I also read they don't like Citranella so that Orange Spray odor remover might work. I say good luck..been there. |
we just lock our cats up downstairs and let them have the run of the basement during xmas time. lol.
|
used to put tape on the counters.. sticky side up
they'd hate it when they'd jump onto counters and get tape all ofer especially wide stipped masking tape after 3-4 times they learn |

we don't have a basement, we live in an apartment (a big one, but no basement). otherwise, I'd do this as well :) I'll keep that in mind for when we buy a house. :thumbsup |

I think you have done everything I would have suggested. I must be lucky cuz the cat's didn't do much last year to the tree other than 3 ornaments got knocked down and broke. :( In the big pic it was still ok. I didn't put a tree up this year so I don't know if they would be as good.
:) |
give the cat something to cling on like a rope, yarn or anything that he could climb or trip on
|
make some tuna salad with habenero peppers and put it under the tree, when he eats it, after the vomit and screaming from burning crapping after that, he will never want to go near that tree again
|
I have the same problem with my cats
I have to anchor the tree to the wall to keep them from pulling it over when they jump on it One of my cats is 20lbs so he knocks it over with ease |
I just make sure I tie the tree well so it dosn't fall
and let them ride it as long as they want. |

but its fucking christmas, let them have their part of fun. Its only a tree and some bulbs |
had cats for ages, grab him out of the tree just dump him on the floor, same with getting on the kitchencounter etc, keep doing it, you gotta train him, just like a dog, otherwise theyll make your life hell and back. Takes a while but they gotta understand whos the boss, dont do the cant climb the tree hunny line then feed him, cats are smart theyll walk over you otherwise.
|
if the cat does it mostly while you are asleep maybe you should keep him confined to one room or to one floor, whichever so he can't get access to the tree when you're not around.
|
very pretty cat you have. I have used foil at base of tree. cats usually hate foil for some reason. should outgrow this eventually. :) good luck
|
Beautiful cat!! Looks alot like mine. Mine likes to sleep on the branches and break the ornaments. I usually spray him with a water bottle but that doesnt help when we're not around.

Two-sided tape on your tree might have your cat pull the whole thing down though lol. |
Over feed him, fat cats are lazy and don't climb shit.
|
Just politely ask him to stop. Cats are little people in fur coats.
|
I don't think it is possible. My cat has a crazy idea to hang on the curtain. I can' explain him he shouldn't.
It is by now i am not having the tree. What will be then? I am afraid of thinking. |
Luckily, none of my cats were ever interested in the Christmas tree. I never had one that clawed the furniture, either.
I'd say put him in the bedroom and shut the door while you're sleeping. Better than spraying stinky stuff on the tree and having to smell it yourself. |
It wouldn't be Christmas to me without cats in our tree..
And cats eating tinsel! And gross as it is there arent' many things funnier than Christmas cat droppings. :1orglaugh |

That's pretty much the equivalent of cutting off a human's fingers at the knuckle. Get the vinyl caps put on, instead. |

I want to thank everyone for responding :) I'm going to do a variation of things: tin foil under the tree skirt (maybe that will help), double sided tape on the branches inside the tree where he likes to climb, and anytime I see him near the tree when I'm awake, I'll blast him with a squirt of water to spook him. Hopefully I can train him in a few days!! *crosses fingers*

That cat repellent is bad news. I tried it to keep one from peeing on the floor and it just got on her paws and she tracked it over every surface in the house. Then it got on my hands and on the food I was eating and it tastes nasty! I was tasting that stuff for a week.
