Pets: Property or Family Members?

As a result of Katrina, Members of Congress were so outraged over the fate of abandoned pets that they put some teeth into legislation, requiring communities to make provisions for animals during natural disasters or lose their federal funding.

is this a positive development or a waste of legislative and tax payer resources?

To be blunt, I care more about my dog than I do someone elses kid.

Spunky 12-08-2006 08:29 PM

My pets are just like the kids I never had.

shekinah 12-08-2006 08:39 PM

Question why is it that whenever a person owns a pet, they tend love it more compare to a true person?

LunaBigheart 12-08-2006 08:41 PM

for me, pets are more as family meber rather than a property

Because most people are shit.

madawgz 12-08-2006 08:46 PM

a dog is part of the family

DjSap 12-08-2006 08:48 PM

Pet's are members of the family, pet owners who do not agree with this should be shot.

I would rather have them save the dogs than the people seeing as 90% of the people out there are either liars, annoying or idiots.

seeric 12-08-2006 08:49 PM

- can't leave on their own free will
- get fed when you feed them
- given a name when acquired

sounds like a prisoner. lol. j/k

i think they should be treated as family.

starpimps 12-08-2006 08:54 PM

did you hear about all those dogs slaughtered during katrina, people had to leave thier pets in this building and wrote messages like "this is buddy if anyone finds him, treat him good" on the walls or whatever

i think fema came in and blasted like 20 dogs...pretty crazy =(

wyldblyss 12-08-2006 08:55 PM

My dogs are like family. They follow me wherever I go, sleep with me, take care of me when I am sad, and sometimes they annoy the hell out of me.

Kind of sounds like my husband actually lol

Exactly, it doesn't talk behind your back! I love my cat and could never part with him. He always cuddles with me when I'm sad and he only cries when he needs food or water. Granted he gets into stuff but he doesn't know anybetter! He just likes playing

your cat hates you. if you didn't feed it, pet it and change its litter box, it would cut your throat while you are sleeping and never think twice about it.

i completely disagree generally speaking. if there is a cat that acts that way, it should not be in that home.

i have lots of cats and they follow me everywhere, respect me, sleep with me under the covers in my arms, and another makes muffins in my hair.

they say hello to me often. it's nice having go friends around.

if you have lots of cats and consider them your "good friends" that say "hello" - then most would agree that you are just a few years away from owning 50 cats in a small apartment and spending most of your days pushing a banged up shopping cart up and down your street while mumbling to yourself.

then there is what the family will be always thinking.....

- "C'mon kids, time to go visit grandpa"
- "Do we have to mommy??? he's crazy, he smells funny and his apartment stinks"

it's quite clear u have an issues with cats and cat owners. it is a shame, for they are loyal, compasionate and clean animals.

ok... i admit that i have issues

....with people that substitute relationships with people with relationships with animals, then rationalize it by saying "my cat says hello to me and are good friends" and insist they possess human emotions and behaviors.

they are just animals... and you're not Dr Doolittle.

yes, they are "just animals" and don't forget that you and i are as well.
interspecial comunication is quite common in the wild as well as at home.

anyway, i am always shocked by the number of ppl who imply that pets are _just property_ instead of living, breathing, feeling and (sometimes ;) intelligent animals.

YOUR KID scratched my little girl at school. now please declaw your kid.

That's all true except that my cat doesn't hate me, she loves me. She can't help it if she's evil.

jmk 12-29-2006 03:33 PM

Family! Love my dog, he's the only one I trust cos he's loyal ;)

ChefJeff 12-29-2006 03:34 PM

Part of the family

scottybuzz 12-29-2006 03:42 PM

part of the family, but if i had to save a dieing man or a dieing dog(yes my own) i would save the dieing man.

scouser 12-29-2006 03:44 PM

"positive development". No argument in my mind.
