Morals to me and most people I know is simply the difference between right and wrong. A mechanic "fixing" something that isn't broken and subsequently overcharging someone, is in fact stealing and cheating. I wouldn't consider that someone with high moral standards.

I think you're mistaking the definition for what each individuals own morals actually are.

To me morals are making a choice between doing someting that is not illegal. If you do something illegal, I think it is simply illegal, not unmoral. Like abortion. It is legal but someone may choose not to do it because of their morals. Or scamming someone. I don't think choosing not scam someone is not a moral issue, I think it is more of an issue where you choose to follow the rules/laws.

Maybe morals can be more narrowly defined as right vs wrong, but then your "beliefs" would be the wild card. What do you believe is right and wrong.

To me, many of the laws on the books are nonsensical and are representative of the morals of a group of people. Like abortion. That doesn't make them RIGHT. It wasn't against the law to own slaves at one time. Making the choice to actually OWN them was however.

But, when there is a potential victim (please god don't use a fetus as an example here-that's another debate altogether) and a clear choice, the choice you make can easily define your morals...whether it's a law or not. All imo of course.
