QUESTION: Why do Americans measure things in terms of 'football fields' ??????

I've been reading a lot of news articles lately and it seems that whenever there's something large being talked about, in order to describe the largeness of it, journalists size it up in terms of how many football fields it could contain.

For example:

"TORONTO, Ontario (AP) -- A giant ice shelf the size of 11,000 football fields has snapped free from Canada's Arctic, scientists said."

What is this all about? Are the readers supposed to suddenly understand the size because they all should know exactly how bit 11,000 football fields are??

If we used "cricket fields" it would be to confusing, like that metric shit.

scottybuzz 12-29-2006 11:33 AM

because then you can get a feel for just how big things are.

11,000 football fields is a pretty ridiculous comparison but if you say that a Nimitz class aircraft carrier is 3 football fields long that is pretty clear to an American football fan.

i would love to hear some american guy trying to express his penis length messured in football fields

Interestingly enough, some old arabic word 'kamel' (or phonetically similar) actually means 'rope'. You know the saying about putting a camel through the eye of a needle? It's supposed to mean a rope, not a damn snotty desert beast.

:thumbsup

The Length "Football Field" is the closest thing to the Metric system for Americans - Learn to love it!

Well this thread went nowhere fast.

I've often wondered the same thing. Especially since Cdn football fields are much larger, yet we insist on using the same comparison sometimes.

Haha that's even worse then! surely they could say 1,100,000 yards long instead of '11,000' football fields' ... :)

Oh, anyway they are talking about 'size' in general, so I suppose they mean area. But again, do they mean surface area or entire area? What's the area of a football field anyway?

And when something is measured as say ten football fields, do they mean the playing area or the entire field? The stadium?

It's so confusing... :Oh crap :Oh crap :helpme

spazlabz 12-29-2006 12:00 PM

because if you said to your basic red state american that something is 120 yards long they would just stare at you and blink
thats why

The usual use is length of the playing area (not counting the endzone). 100 yards.

First bad example since its from TO.. as everyone knows EVERYTHING in Canada is BIGGER lol our field is longer & wider than an American field & (best slogan the CFL ever came up with...) OUR BALLS ARE BIGGER!! lol

But is easier saying x amount of fields cuz everyone (its assumed) things that the a football field is just 100yards (ppl always forget to count the endzone as yardage)
So instead of saying 3000yrds or however many, they just say 30 football fields.
