I want to buy a self defense weapon. What should I get?

Next month Im going to be moving into an area that's kinda shitty so I want something to protect myself in case someone tries to mug me or something.
I talked to a guy who got a baseball bat in the face here last year just from walking at night, so I want something on me in case.

What should I get? I'm not into guns and they freak me out and Id be uncomfortable walking around with it on my side thinking it might go off if I lean into it or something. Do they make like guns that are lite, like a bb-gun?
I dont want a knife becasue then I'd have to get close to them and I dont know how to fight so they'd take me over easily.

seeric 12-30-2006 04:21 PM

walther ppk 380.

great stopping power. small and easily concealable. great under the mattress piece.

cheekycherry 12-30-2006 04:29 PM

Is it really legal to carry a gun on the street in public in the USA nowadays?

I find that crazy! Proper wild west style.

cheekycherry 12-30-2006 04:31 PM

I'd invest in some good martial arts training. I think confidence is what you really need and are lacking. Plus, you'll probably need your weapon just when you didn't expect to need it and not have it with you!

TimBlaze 12-30-2006 04:36 PM

get a stun gun/taser that can always fit in your pockets. and learn how to punch so you can make sure the person is knocked out.

in a REAL life situation martial arts only helps you've trained like a mutha you're whole life and can react on "instinct"

Plus "on the street" there's no rules like in a dojo...

Fizzgig 12-30-2006 04:41 PM

Strap some road flares and a clock to your chest and hook it up to an old joystick, then when anyone comes near you scream "Let's go to heaven together!!!!"

dynastoned 12-30-2006 04:42 PM

just rip a motha fuckers ear off. it only takes a very minimal amount of pressure to tear one off. someone starts choking you or gets on top of you rip one of those fuckers off. i promise even if you do end up dead hes going to get a few suspicious looks.

Cyndalie 12-30-2006 04:42 PM

Im not going to learn much martial arts in the next 4 weeks, so would rather get something for now.

thats a good idea. old ladies use that so they'll work for me too.

jeffrey 12-30-2006 04:44 PM

For home a shotgun is best.

To carry make sure your state says you can, and follow what they say.
Stopping power is bullshit, any gun can kill you, and any gun could not kill you.
Everyone and there dog knows a friend of a friend that saw someone get shot 11 times center mass with a 9mm and didnt die, and not only that stall came after them.
Its all shit, look around and you will find stories of people getting shot with rifle rounds and not dieing.
Besides most of the time the site of the gun is enough.

And always remember that the gun could be taken and used against you, so if you take it out be prepaired to take another humans life without thinking.

tazers can work good, not always legal though.
learn to punch... in the nuts and throat, then other soft sinsitive areas, never hit their head, its harder then your hand unless you can box or something.

notabook 12-30-2006 04:45 PM

High power stun-gun. 900,000 kv = ;)

a good pair of running shoes

Why would you knowingly move into a shitty area in the first place?

get the most powerful one that you can because if theres more than one attacker you dont wanna have to spend like 10 seconds on each guy for him to go down

I agree mostly with what you say, which is why I said he needs it for confidence.

The amount of "fights", "muggings", "trouble" I've got out of by just knowing how to HANDLE the other person is well... A lot.

Example 1, I get some road rage. Guy starts getting crazy and jumps out car. I apologize for what I did to piss him off. Instead of defusing the situation he must have seen me for a soft touch, so I went the other way. Started shouting and threw my hat off exposing my shaven to the bone head. He fucked off.

Happened dozens of times.

If you don't have the confidence then you wouldn't have the GUTS to escalate the situation if you know it needs to be.

Even with all the obvious problems with Martial Arts, you can't deny they give you extra confidence - hence my statement.:2 cents:

BEFORE you do anything, read this...

http://www.amazon.com/Gift-Fear-Gavi...e=UTF8&s=books

And if you still decide to carry a weapon, buy BOTH of these items, but employ the principles from the DeBecker book.

I need to be in the city. I've been really depressed since moving to the weat coast and I think its because IM so isolates where I live, its so boring and nothing happens. I'm talking to myself here lol

mortenb 12-30-2006 06:10 PM

I'm with cheekycherry on this one. 9 out of 10 times attackers are weak themselves and only pray on those that seem weaker. Showing them that you won't back down and that you are ready to fight, even though you really isn't, will scare most of them. Those last 10% that don't back down when you stand up to them, are the crazy fuckers that are in it just for the fight and against them I recommend the running shoes.

Confidence is the best weapon against being attacked!

(then again, I'm 6.4 and 250 pounds of mostly muscle, so i might have it easier than others)

HorseShit 12-30-2006 06:14 PM

seriously, like a few others have already pointed out get yourself a small side arm such as the S&W .38, I know if I was in a shitty area I would feel much safer

You can walk to the corner (gun) store in CA & buy one. Have to pass a short test is all. To carry (legally), it is hard to get a permit.

MikeVega 12-30-2006 06:29 PM

There is no way you should get a gun. the fact that your afraid you'll lean on it and it will go off scares the shit out of me. You need some sirius gun training before you run around with a gun or your going to get hurt and probably hurt someone else. get yourself some pepper spray and call it a day. you can be 5 feet away and not kill anyone or yourself. best thing you can do is not go out at night alone if it's a shit area. I can tell that you have Easy Target written all over you ..get some training and confidence and it will go a long way.

Hammerless is much better .. it's preferred even by the NYPD as an off duty in fact i believe you can't have one with a hammer as an off duty. it's also much better to have concealed because you can shoot through your pocket or jacket because there is no hammer to get caught in cloths. that's a very reliable gun

you can keep it in your house without a permit tho right?

I recommend the GayDT home security kit.

All you need is a TV and a DVD player in every room on the first floor. Before going to sleep for the night, activate the GayDT security system--slip in a solid hardcore gay feature into each DVD player and turn all TVs on (Mute them if you are a light sleeper).

Studies show that most home invaders are more frightened of guy-on-guy action than they are of a thirty-aught-six.

Granted, this system will not work against the gay burglar, but studies also show that the average homosexual has a nicer house than you do anyway.

SmokeyTheBear 12-30-2006 07:12 PM

acid and a squirt gun

but a forewarning that goes for every weapon suggested.. #1 thing you have to remember is what happens if you lose the weapon in the struggle.. Make sure you build a failsafe into it.. if its a gun make sure it only fires for you..

There are several easy ways to modify any trigger firing gun to make it hard to fire if you dont know the trick..

An easy little trick with most handguns is a simple plastic zip tie over the trigger, cut the zip tie partway thru will make you have to really pull hard to squeeze off a round. If someone gets the gun they will most likely be confused long enough for you to get away..

Pepper spray

If you do invest in pepper spray, make sure you get the one with the stream and not the fog type. All that shit does is blow back at you. When you hose someone, put the can up to his face and blast him in the eyes. The only people I have seen not react to it are ex convicts. Everyone else curls into a ball and starts choking because the chemical will be reacting on his nose, eyes and lungs all at the same time. They think that they cannot breathe and snot starts pouring down their face. Then run as fast as you fucking can.Don't waste your time with tear gas, it is useless. Define shitty area? Compton? Rialto? San Bernardino? Curious...

Mike, I definitely agree. The "Gift of Fear" book is all he needs, actually (mental training), and probably some pepper spray. But those are my personal recommendations (from experience) for something uh "heavier".

The reason I prefer hammerless is due to snagging, specifically from a coat pocket or bag. And remember, 99% of crimes prevented with a gun, the gun is never fired. I've prevented two personally and did not fire.

In my youth, an army jacket with a confederate flag, a shaved head & doc martens did the trick. Now, I settle for a trenchcost & goatee. ;)

How do guys know all these things?
I held a gun once a week ago and I didnt like it. I want to get like a bb gun or a non lethal gun. Oh like a paint ball gun would be great, so I could just bruise them but not kill someone.
