Anyone using Shared hosting instead of full dedicated

I've been thinking about Phatservers Shared hosting
http://phatservers.net/hosting_plans/shared/index.html
Only 4 Users per machine for $75

Short of dedicated isn't this a good deal?
Whats the the dowside if there is one?

he-fox 12-31-2006 10:25 AM

no downside

unless VPS, the downside is if that one ( or more ) of the 4 users is taping in too much ressources, you are affected.
This is for every host.

But don't the host allocated only so much resource for each user

bizarredollars 12-31-2006 11:21 AM

Just for SEO... for large scale stuff, dedicated is the only way to go imho..

fuhkinglou 12-31-2006 11:24 AM

I use dreamhost and it's okay for shared. Cheap deals. But if you get listed somewhere with a ton of traffic they will shut you down without warning and then throttle you from then on out.

I've been using shared hosting with phatservers ~2 years ago. And it was working very well. I LOVE their support. Answer within 5 minutes or less.

kaori 12-31-2006 11:25 AM

Wouldn't a virtual shared account offer potentially more power than one of the $200 dedicateds?
unless of course you get hammered with 3 other heavy users...

ROBO2017 12-31-2006 11:27 AM

I’ve been looking at hosting packages also. I was thinking of a dedicated server, because it isn’t that much more. Now I’m not so sure. Semi dedicated is probably just as good.

I like the idea of keeping my properties on a box of their own though.

Only on a VPS ( Virtual Private Server ).

This offer is basically a regular virtual account, with fixed accounts.

Since the specs are pretty high in space/bw, I would presume that people buying that WILL use the ressources, unlike the normal small virtual accounts ...

Now, that box as a dedicated, is worth about 139.00 $US....

scouser 12-31-2006 11:44 AM

I know directfiesta just had a rant at cash for "spamming" about DH, but ... if you do go with dreamhost, you can get the full $97 off using LONDON97 (see http://london-seo.com/how-to-make-mo...7-discount/38/ for info about it... using that doesn't direcly make me anything, and gets you the full discount)

I use dreamhost. They're good. I find their support (email) very very fast and good. Although I know some people havn't had the same experience.

depends on the box... This is an ordinary P4 server ....

The same deal on a Dual Xeon, 2 gigs ECC megs, 10 000 ( or 15K ) rpm scsi drives, dual nic and so on , would be great.
This is OK, but exposed... I would prefer a Celeron 3.0 dedicated ... at 89.00/moth with 1000 gigs of bw..
But that is a personnal opinion.

not a rant .... ( and by the way, I havean account with them www.fistingvideos.info that I use for testing).
Just that in another thread where another poster was asking for Europe hosting, CASH posted the exact ( I repeat: exact ) same post. ....
So if somebody asked for a load balanced server, he will also post his stupid spam ...
At least, he should spam where he has a chance of getting business :2 cents:

pretty cheap ... for galleries, static website and similar, it should be fine, but the BW is quite limited ( 512 kbps )

165 gb per month !!!

If you intend to use that for heavy database use ( Comus, WP, SiteDepth), it could be challenged ...

If VPS, yes. At least it should be.

Dvae 12-31-2006 12:49 PM

Out of curiosity how many users do most hosts put on a virtual box?

69pornlinks 12-31-2006 01:06 PM

couple hundered easliy...

chaze 12-31-2006 01:11 PM

Some of the shared hosting is better then dedicated servers people have. better back ups and newer more streamlined machines. If you don't have a high cpu needs then shared if fine in most cases. maybe see what the server specs are. If they are using a ide drive then it's an older server and probably not very good for shared. I would make sure they are using sata just so you know it's a newer server.

HorseShit 12-31-2006 01:17 PM

You will be very happy with Phatservers! Awesome hosting

That really depends on the host I would presume.

Some hosts make their customers share IP's on a virtual box, others (like GWH) do not share IP's.
