in the millions, how do you like 'dem apples?

A reasonable estimate would probably be around $500K and 6 months. This is based on $150K for site design and programming, $100K for real (but dead) profiles from other dating sites, $100K for equipment (expect to spend a lot more once the site starts getting serious traffic), and $150K for miscellaneous expenses, mistakes, cost overruns. This is assuming you don't have any sort of infrastructure currently in place.

The major expense this estimate doesn't include is traffic. You could spend $5/day or $50K/day. Of course if you're spending half a million for a site I'd suggest making sure you have atleast $500K for the first 3 months of traffic, afterwhich you should start having a somewhat decent cashflow.

Or you could pay $100 for a dating script.

Pay some Romanian kid $100 to optimize it.

Pay some Indian MySql genius $200 to optimize the database.

Hire 3rd world web laborers for $500 to create thousands of fake profiles.

But then all you have still is a domain name and a database.

Traffic and marketing = big bucks. So ya....300k-500k is a fair estimate.

The db can be shared with an existing company. Domain + $5k + advertising will do it. Plus if you want to go it on your own down the road you can take your members you brought in with you.
