40 years in prison for popups?

Quote:

NORWICH -- State Prosecutor David Smith said he wondered why Julie Amero didn't just pull the plug on her classroom computer.

The six-person jury Friday may have been wondering the same thing when they convicted Amero, 40, of Windham of four counts of risk of injury to a minor, or impairing the morals of a child. It took them less than two hours to decide the verdict. She faces a sentence of up to 40 years in prison.

Oct. 19, 2004, while substituting for a seventh-grade language class at Kelly Middle School, Amero claimed she could not control the graphic images appearing in an endless cycle on her computer.

"The pop-ups never went away," Amero testified. "They were continuous."

The Web sites, which police proved were accessed while Amero was in the classroom, were seen by as many as 10 minor students. Several of the students testified during the three-day trial in Norwich Superior Court to seeing images of naked men and women.

Computer expert W. Herbert Horner, testifying in Amero's defense, said he found spyware on the computer and an innocent hair styling Web site "that led to this pornographic loop that was out of control."

"If you try to get out of it, you're trapped," Horner said.

But Smith countered Horner's testimony with that of Norwich Police Detective Mark Lounsbury, a computer crimes investigator. On a projected image of the list of Web sites visited while Amero was working, Lounsbury pointed out several highlighted links.

"You have to physically click on it to get to those sites," Smith said. "I think the evidence is overwhelming that she did intend to access those Web sites."

Among the sites Amero visited were meetlovers.com and femalesexual.com, along with others with more graphic names.

Defense attorney John Cocheo moved for a mistrial shortly before closing arguments Friday, based on reports jurors had discussed the case while eating lunch at the Harp and Dragon. Each of the jurors denied the allegation under questioning by Judge Hillary Strackbein and the motion was denied.

Cocheo, who said he was surprised by the verdict, especially with the "contradictory evidence," said he planned to appeal. Amero had no visible reaction to the verdict, though her family was obviously upset.

Amero, because the charges are felonies, faces 40 years in prison at her March 2 sentencing. Her family, present in court for entire trial, declined comment about the verdict.

Perhaps it already was posted on GFY, but I haven't saw it here.

But what's about the sentence? It's fuckin' 40 years of prison!

Adultnet 01-14-2007 11:19 AM

thats not good

CaptainHowdy 01-14-2007 11:23 AM

Good call! The infinite pop-up loop is criminal...

MrChips 01-14-2007 11:23 AM

EH? 40 years in jail for (even if it was deliberate) viewing porn?

Why is she going to prison for looking at some porn - wasnt something nasty was it?

Totally confused.

scottybuzz 01-14-2007 11:27 AM

She faces a sentence of up to 40 years in prison.

doesnt mean shes having 40 years in jail does it.

SmokeyTheBear 01-14-2007 11:35 AM

wtf thats insane . do none of the jurors have a computer..

I wonder though about the "expert" testimony, i would have to know a bit more about the evidence but seems to me the prosecution has its facts wrong.. unless a site was manually typed into the address bar theres no way of knowing if the user clicked to get to a link or if it was just sent there by a redirect/iframe/etc

I bet she just got zangoed..

you're totally confused because you are not very smart. get used to that sensation. the bad news is that a lot of really cool shit will fly right over your head all the time. the good news is that every day will be a new day full of non stop excitement and wonderment for you at the sight of anything small and shiny. you will always be entertained.

she was found guilty of the charges... she hasn't been sentenced at all. the reporter simply added up the maximum penalties for everything she was convicted of and wrote a sensationalistic news story to excite people like you. not that its hard. your an easy target and usually just takes a good headline.

being burdened by a low IQ, and understandably a little slow to grasp things... let me highlight a few (what most would consider obvious) points.

1) it was a notebook
2) she brought it to class
3) she could have prevented anyone from seeing what was being displayed on the screen at any moment - but didn't
4) the prosecutors proved she was visiting porn sites while at work, in a class room.
5) the prosecutors proved she allowed several students to view the porn on her computer.

RogerV 01-14-2007 11:40 AM

What is this world turning into..its just nudity and sex.

Andiz 01-14-2007 11:40 AM

I blame Zango!

SmokeyTheBear 01-14-2007 11:42 AM

the domains mentioned in the article dont appear to have any adult images , one is a toplist one is about womens sexual issues, although both have links to adult sites with nude images ( like google )

I highly suspect this person had zango or something like it and it was popping adult sites over dating type sites. Not that one should be viewing dating sites at work .

The issue is about minors viewing the porn though and they didnt explain that part well , was she showing them websites and porn was popping over it or was she showing them porn.. or did she simply leave zango on a computer that kept popping adult sites based on keywords in the urls.

potentially could mean international news or just local news :thumbsup

FuqALot 01-14-2007 12:08 PM

usa = shit hah

heywood 01-14-2007 12:11 PM

She was obviously viewing porn in class, and showing it to the kids, likely for gratification. Otherwise she would have unplugged the projector and fixed the problem.

But 40 years in prison? give me a fucking break. She could have molested every child in the room and gotten less.

madawgz 01-14-2007 12:15 PM

thats pretty fucked up..

cheekycherry 01-14-2007 12:19 PM

Only in America.

Dirty Dane 01-14-2007 12:56 PM

lol.......

Klen 01-14-2007 01:24 PM

That is warning message for all other people who will try to do same.

pussyluver 01-14-2007 01:26 PM

So the end result is:

Zango forces woman to 40 year jail sentence

Gee that would make a nice headline for Drudge...

Disclaimer - I used Zango just to make a point, I am not actually blaming Zango. Drudge would understand as would Drudgereport...

Now that does bring up another issue. What about those repsponsible for the click fraud, spyware or scumware? Are they not culpable too? Didn't read the whole article and I am not familiar with the case. I do get the impression that porn was found where it was not expected to be. Who did that and were they in the court room? Should they have been? Should the managers and engineers of google go to trial for showing the way to porn to anyone that cares to look?

I bet all the minors that saw porn or just naked people have already seen worse on the home PCs. Let's throw the parents in jail too.

A lot of really kinky shit comes off shore from the US. Maybe we should pull the plug on the Internet connections to other countries to protect the children. Or how about you have to be 18 to use a computer?

C_U_Next_Tuesday 01-14-2007 01:27 PM

Sounds like this woman needs a better lawyer and an expert witness of her own.

WHy dont some of you porn pop up spyware wizards offer your expertise?

Agent 488 01-14-2007 01:27 PM

having zango on your computer can get your 40 years in prison.

what a lame news story.

these days, female teachers FUCK their students. this one just showed them some porn. whats the big deal?

wyldworx 01-14-2007 01:54 PM

I dunno I could think of arguments either way, it seems he is responsible, but 40 years, not even child molesters get that. In that sense it is fucked!!~!

Welcome to the USA of Bush!

loco12 01-14-2007 02:03 PM

Draconian sentence if she even goes to jail. A slap on the wrists and a $200 fine would be enough. Doubt they would be that tough in China.

Hear stories of kids getting arrested for opening their Christmas presents early, then life in jail for stealing a pizza.

What a totally fucked up place to live.

A slap on the wrist after the government spent all that money on prosecution? Plus the trial. Slap on the wrist if she plea bargained. This will have to cost. Prosecutor offices are rated by cases won and sending people to jail.

Go almost anywhere in Holland and you will see nudity and sex products, advertisements, etc etc.... all over the place, not just in the RedLight district. XXX Videos for sale right on the checkout counter at gas stations, Dildo sextoy shop store windows right next to a shoe store and dress shop windows. It's really odd for a Westerner at first.

Once you get used to it and notice how people think about that stuff over there it's no big deal. The youth over there are some of the most level headed and mature minded I have ever seen.

On top of that, if I'm not mistaken, you only have to be 16 to view a porno movie over there. BUT if you want to go see a movie with violence and murder you have to be 18+. (were talking PG13 movies here)

It really makes a lot of sense IMO. You don't see thousands and thousands of minors having babies before they even graduate highschool like you do here.

Same theory holds true about their legalized weed smoking. The ratio of Dutch minors versus US minors smoking weed is 10X higher here in the US, even though it's legal in Holland. Smoking weed in the Nederlands is just not made out to be a rebellious activity in their culture.

When I asked a guy I was working with in the Netherlands: "do you smoke weed?", he answered: "Course no! It's all for the tourists, mostly the Americans". So I think there is a truth in your comments.
