Mac users help! laptop advice

My girlfriend is a Mac user I want to buy her a laptop to replace her desktop.
As far as I can tell its a mid range G4 iMac with a 15" screen looks the same as this:

I was thinking to get her a refurbed 15" laptop with the same OS but a slightly better spec if possible. I am looking on ebay but I am confused about all the models etc.

Maybe I should spend a bit and get her a brand new machine? She says the stuff runs great right now on that old machine. Shes not very good at computers and I don't know shit about MAC's so I don't wanna spend $G's on a new one machine we won't be able to transfer her old stuff and get it working easily.

any advice appreciated!

get her a black macbook . . they are nice and not all that expensive

i suppose it depends on how much you want to spend, but you shouldn't have any trouble transferring her old mac's apps and files to a newer mac, many of the programs she currently uses will probably already be on the newer mac preinstalled and in the latest version. older version of programs that ran on a mac before can still run on a mac now (unless she uses the Classic 9 OS for anything, which i doubt).

macbooks are sexy but everything is kind of expensive new. you might look into getting her a macbook 13" or a macbook pro 15" from somewhere like craigslist or eBay for less money.

i wouldn't recommend a g5 tower (which i doubt you're considering if you don't want to spend a lot of cash) because some applications don't have support in that environment yet. hope something in here helped! :) :2 cents:

thanks for the help I think I am getting to understand it
so they stopped using their own CPU's and the new ones are all intel's called MacBooks so I shouldn't consider an ibook G4 because its basically obsolete?

the ibook 13" looks about right. one thing though its way better than my vgn-s360 vaio i run my entire life on and I know she will just use it for checking yahoo mail it doesn't seem right!

Just make sure you get her an intel mac.

IMO the current intel iMacs are awesome value. I'd get one of those personally: http://store.apple.com/Apple/WebObje...ECBF&nclm=iMac

You may also wanna check out the Apple refurb store for some bargains: http://store.apple.com/Apple/WebObje...nclm=Certified

If you buy any current iMac or Macbook, they'll be way faster than here current G4.

They are not obselete, just slightly older. Developers make apps nowadays that will run on intel and Power PC just fine.

iBook, PowerMac, PowerBook = old Power PC CPUs, anything that has a Gx in the title is older.

Macbook, Macbook Pro, Mac Pro - new Intel machines

Mac Mini & iMac = both these machines have versions for PPC and versions for Intel. The iMac G5 was the last iMac before the intel transition, it looks identical to the iMac Core 2 Duo's you can buy today.

I switched to a mac and I love it. Mac book pro is the bomb its the 17 but its probably to big for what she needs the 15's are sweet. Plus with boot camp you can even get those pesky windows or linux apps to run.

Yea... I got my girlfriend one of the black macbook's. Its a nice little machine. The CD drives on hers makes scary noises when you put in certain discs.. but thats about the only problem with it.

Yes, with a few subtle differences, the hardware in a mac, is like the hardware in a PC. Intel CPU's.

If you go the refurbished route, definitely do not purchase a g4. Intel mac's only.
