Chilean authorities probe Web ad offering AIDS-tainted blood

SANTIAGO (AFP) - Chilean authorities have launched a probe into an Internet advertisement offering to sell blood contaminated with
AIDS, officials said Wednesday.

The ad, posted on the Latin American Internet sales site www.deremate.com, offered "blood with AIDS for sale, 100,000 pesos (185 dollars) for five milliliters (0.2 fluid ounces)."

The tainted blood was "ideal for suicide," said the ad, which was posted for nine days and received 45 Web hits until police discovered it.

Police identified the ad's author as Carlos Fajardo Zamora, who lives in Quilpue, west of Santiago. Authorities searched his home but found no trace of contaminated blood.

Fajardo told police it was all "a joke among friends," but authorities are investigating whether he established contact with potential buyers via e-mail. Fajardo remains free during the investigation.
