Would you buy an American made car these days?

I went with a friend to look at 1 year old cars today and we had our minds set on either a 2006 Honda or a Mazda in the lot, but when we drove them they both sucked. They were small and didnt have a lot of the power features.

Then we drove a 2006 Chevy and a 2006 Ford and they were both really nice to drive. Roomy, had power everything, felt more solid.

I've always had it in my head to buy Japanese, but the american cars gave more features for the same money.
Anyways would you buy a newer ford or chevy lately?

Spunky 03-09-2007 07:53 PM

Even though quality has improved and initially some of the new American vehicles seem ok, I fear that as mileage piles up so will the repair bills and hassles---so, my answer is "NO". I cannot forsee myself ever buying another American vehicle, and certainly not one made in Detroit!

I love the Honda's .. I have an accord and it's loaded .. I drive it to work every day .. my brother in law has the 07 Malibu and loaded i think he over paid for it .. I prefer the Honda's

I agree .. they seem to get loose around 50-60k .. shit starts breaking and the car gets noisy .. I know guys that have had Accords for 200k and they hold up well

shake 03-09-2007 09:08 PM

Japanese cars seem to hold up best so that's all I'll buy myself.

maybe if you take care of them better they wouldn't have that problem? my Grand AM GT has 63k miles on it and runs like a champ with no major problems , i traded in my old 2000 Chevy Silverado for it with 95k miles with no problems on that either... but yet my 1991 Mitsubishi Eclipse had more problems then both my american made vehicles combined... all depends on how well its taken care of...

I take very good care of all my cars. almost to the point on obsession . trucks are different but US cars have always been shaky for me. I've never had a single problem with any of my Acura's / Honda's and even Range Rovers. even if i treated my cars like total shit the Honda would still be handling it better

flashfire 03-09-2007 10:15 PM

Certain ones for sure...Dodge charger and Dodge Ram pickups for instance

evildick 03-09-2007 10:21 PM

Actually I buy North American made vehicles exclusively. There's nothing from the foreign manufacturers (in my price range and suitable to drive where I live) that interests me. Nothing at all. Of course you can spend a fortune and pick up some high end european car that I'm sure would be fantastic, but if I was going to spend 80K plus on a car I'd sooner buy a new vette.

Plus it makes me feel better knowing I am supporting some of the local populace, since the local economy basically hinges on auto manufacturing in a big way.

I'll stick to my GM trucks. Also been debating on picking up a Jeep Rubicon. So much fun for only 30K.

Spunky 03-09-2007 10:24 PM

Never owned Jap scrap and never will.Chev and Dodge forever

woj 03-09-2007 10:50 PM

You get what you pay for... Japanese cars are more expensive, because they make better cars, it's as simple as that..

s9ann0 03-09-2007 10:52 PM

i love jap cars but if I had money to burn and lived in US I think I'd like to try a viper or maybe a z06 vette.. maybe some handling mods

Trax 03-10-2007 06:06 AM

there may be some decent american cars
but its european for me all the way
german that is

I'm not gonna buy a F1-8million and spend more money on gasoline than life, while simultaneously bitching my life away about the high gas prices, that I would be partly responsible for because of my gas guzzling super-power truck. :2 cents:

My first car was Japanese. The one I have now is German. I never had an American made car before. I think I really like German cars now...

Depends on what you mean by "American made" - the Toyota Camry is made in America whereas the Chevy Lumina is made in Canada and the Ford Fusion is made in Mexico :2 cents:

My 2997 Camry's doorjam sticker shows it was made in Japan (but it's a hybrid, so perhaps that's the reason!).

I know Toyota is opening up a big plant around here (Canada) in the next couple years. I believe they are going to be making some trucks here.

Steve Awesome 03-10-2007 07:55 AM

Just drove a 2007 Ford Mustang rental. Roomy in the front, tiny backseat, but it had a throaty engine and was fun to drive. Gas mileage sucked, but, eh.

CosmicTang 03-10-2007 09:41 AM

hell BMW builds cars in America too.

I avoid the cars built by American car companies, regardless of where they're put together. The Big Three seem to build great trucks, but cars....

I love the Mustang, but the interior looks like someone scammed some of the design budget to build a second home in Aspen or something.

Rochard 03-10-2007 09:52 AM

I've been driving nothing but Fords since 1995 and until recently I've never had a problem. Everyone talks about the lack of quality in American cars and I just don't see it. I've purchased five new Mustangs, one new Escape, and one Explorer. The only problem I've had was with my most recent Mustang, which is really used. The alternator died and needed to be replaced. I dropped the car in on a Monday, it was covered under warrenty, and they also did the 30k tuneup on the car.

J.R. 03-10-2007 10:43 AM

I drive a GMC Yukon and the wife drives a Ford truck and Jeep . I only buy american . I like GMC over chevy although they are the same company. The Ford Egde looks to be a cool car .

They think it is 1980. They are the same people that think H-D leaks oil.
