TGPs with over 100,000 uniques claims...

What is the actual number of uniques when excluding the traffic trade skim?

For instance when a TGP claims they have over 250,000 uniques.... WHAT DO THEY REALLY HAVE?

Jakke PNG 03-13-2007 06:19 AM

what does traffic skim have to do with it?

Probably depends who the owners are talking to...

When TGP operators talk to each other, "uniques" usually means the number of unique visitors to the site. That's likely what most mean when they are talking to advertisers too, although I guess then some might mean the number of unique clicks generated on their sites.

If so, I suppose you would ask whether that is total clicks (including skimmed to trades) or only clicks to galleries. But given that sites can have anything between a few dozen and several hundred links on a page (and multiple pages), that doesn't tell you a whole lot.

Its safe to say most 100K TGPs have atleast 10-20K bookmarks/SE/type-ins

this is always going to be the most productive traffic, but a unique visitor is the same no matter where it comes from.

What you should ask is what their productivity is and that'll give you a better idea

that'll give you a better idea if they have quality visitors that are likely to make you some sales or if they are feeding to 100k with crap traffic

That's one perspective... another is that bookmarkers are confirmed freeloaders who will never spend a dime and their primary benefit to the site is to fuel the pump to get that other "crap" traffic.

Since you can find equally experienced people arguing both points of view, the truth remains just another of life's many mysteries...

This is a shot in the dark, but... over 250,000 uniques...? :)

For now. The true difficulty in finding out whether bookmarkers buy more or not is imposed by sponsors who offer sub-par stats.

Too many variables to say for sure as there's a lot of "tricks" one can do to help bump up that unique number such as; place your counter code right at the top; open galleries in the same window so some "click backs" get counted again; include known crawlers in the number (that's typically the case as few programs filter those out); buy lots of no cookie traffic; use a page counter on all pages of your site (as opposed to a site counter); etc. etc. etc. etc. etc. etc. etc. etc.

"Assuming" they're not doing much of anything to inflate it, then it's probably 60%-90% of that number.

If you were going to buy a site, you'd want to see all the stat. Counters, trade scripts, server logs etc. and then analyze where all the traffic if coming from.
