do you drive an enviromently friendly vechile?

been reading blogs and they tell me my new car (waiting for it to arrive) the mercedies ML320cdi isn't as good as the lexus rx400H (the me4rcedies is deisel and the lexus is hybrid)

I call bullshit. they get the SAME milage on the highway but the lexus does a little better in the city cause that's how hybrid's work..

ok - fine - lexus wins - but think about this - hybrids need to change ALL the batteries at about 100Kms. that's huge... and massive horrible for the enviroment. deisels go on and on and on and never die - most do WAY over 500Kms - way over.

so which one is really better for the enviroment.........

personally i think deisel is a better option. in 3 years when my lease is up it'll have WAY more value cause it won't need new batteries! it's JUST broken in for a deisel.

and for those that are gona ream me out for being green - i'm also a cheapass so that's my other excuse.... but mostly i got this particular car cause they are in huge demand and very very hard to get and i love having what no one else has.....

they both get just shy of 40MPG and that's awesome for a BIG 4x4 vechile with tons of room

I drive a new civic, its labeled as a ultra fuel efficient vehicle so that means I hug trees everyday.

Linkster 03-14-2007 09:32 PM

If it uses fuel its not "environmentally friendly" - get a bicycle if you really care - otherwise youre just falling for the great American ad hype and another idiot gets suckered

Furious_Female 03-14-2007 09:35 PM

No. I wish Smart Cars were available in the US, I'd so get one! Not just for the environment though

So I can do this!! :)

I've seen a few in my area (Australia). There was a recent fuss because a husband and wife parked their two smart cars in the same spot, and received a fine. The question raised was, are you paying per car, or per spot?

Personally I wouldn't dream of owning one, I don't necessarily subscribe to the "biggest is safest" argument but I do believe that something that small is definitely going to come off second best in an accident.

I'd get it for a secondary/novelty car. I like my space in a car! :1orglaugh Cute though :)

Juicy George 03-14-2007 10:14 PM

My car is sorta environmentally friendly.. It's only a 2.5 litre 6 cylinder... with 2 turbos... :D

(to be honest it's pretty good on fuel provided you don't lean on the accelerator too much)

Nodtveidt 03-14-2007 10:18 PM

My car's pretty fuel efficient, it's a Mitsubishi Mirage Technica from the late 90s...'nuff said. :D

paterson3713 03-14-2007 10:19 PM

I drive the Lexus 400h you speak of....but I didn't really get it for the environment. I got it because it's faster and handles better than the Lexus 350.

gimilin 03-14-2007 10:27 PM

too small.........

Wouldn't even hold my sub woofer.:pimp

96ukssob 03-14-2007 10:44 PM

my car is no way "enviormentally friendly" but does have a really low "smog" rating. If you compare the emissions of most cars in califronia, they are much better than a lot of places elsewhere in the US.

When i moved here, i had a '98 honda accord v6 with low emissions. my friend has the same one but without the emissions dealy and his car didnt pass the smog test. So my point is that i dont think its the size of the engine as much as it is the emissions that is hurting the enviorment

Elli 03-14-2007 11:52 PM

There are tons of Smart cars (Two) around here in Vancouver. They seem to be popular with businesses wanting little peppy cars for service people like Geek Squad type stuff. They're perfectly suited to jetting around town all day, then resting all night: no highway, no long hauls.

They're advertising the Jetta TDI on the radio now, and my friend who reviews cars for a magazine said he drove the TDI to 700km and it still had a quarter of a tank of fuel. The ads say it can go 1000kms on a single tank. Sure, it's still a combustible fuel with emissions, but it can use so much LESS to go the same distance.

Persignup Qon 03-15-2007 12:51 AM

i do, its called a motorcycle :D

Marie 03-15-2007 01:43 AM

My Fiat Punto (yeah I'm so pimp) does 17 km on 1 liter so yes I like to think that it's environmental friendly. At least friendlier than most cars around here and close to the 1:20 of the Toyota Prius. And it's way better looking hehe

The fact that you would get in one and get on the road is troubling.
In even a minor accident you have no chance of surving.
Splat!!

Galina Los 03-15-2007 03:55 AM

I don't know I think that yes... my car is Mazda 3 (not sport)

crockett 03-15-2007 03:58 AM

No but I don't drive very much anymore, but my next new car will likely be something that gets much better gas millage.

As it sits right now, my truck (Toyota Tacoma 4 door) is fairly new, so even if I sold it, someone else would be driving it. So in reality nothing would be done to help the enviroment, simply because the truck would still be on the road.

Being I don't drive it much I don't see it as much of a issue, so I see no reason to change cars at this time. The next time I buy a new car, unless I get the sports car bug I'll likely get something that gets much better gas millage. (surprising enough my Toyota gets about the same gas millage as a full size Chevy truck.. go figure I would have thought it would be much better)

georgeyw 03-15-2007 04:12 AM

No, drive a 5.7L and get somewhere in the realm of 20L per 100k's. Next will be a 6L for daily and 7 or 8L to play with....

evildick 03-15-2007 05:59 AM

If you're trying to go green then neither of those vehicles are really up to the task. If they actually did just shy of 40 MPG that would be great. There's no way they will actually get that.

A German auto magazine tested them (Auto-Motor-und-Sport) and this is what they got for results:
RX400h 10.1 l/100km (23.2 mpg) - ML320CDI 12.4 l/100km (18.9 mpg)

The Lexus was also over a full second quicker from 0 - 60, but had about 7 MPH lower top speed.

Both are nice vehicles though. I'm lucky to get 18 MPG highway in my truck with a 5.7 L V8.

Jman 03-15-2007 06:07 AM

Can't wait to get my 1972 Cadillac on the road ;-)

Vroum Vroum Vroum!!!!!!!!!!!!

fuck the haters.... this car is HOT. anyone whose seen 1 in person is BOUND to want it just for the novelty. i'm sure they're overpriced but i'd pick 1 up in a second if they were available in the US. :thumbsup

bullshit - see post above: http://www.metacafe.com/watch/60538/smart_car_crash/

and i have seen an accident with a smart myself - it looked way better than the other (bigger) car

v4 media 03-15-2007 06:43 AM

I use my mountain bike all around the city, even shopping, they deliver it for free. Only head out the city about twice a month so I hire a car to suit. Heading for mountains a 4x4, motorway driving a comfy ride.

WebairGerard 03-15-2007 07:16 AM

i get pretty good mileage. next new car I get will be hybrid or whatever other technology is available to get better gas mileage.

Yeah I got to get my bike back from Toronto or buy a new mountain bike. I really miss riding in Montreal

One of my cars is kinda environment friendly, it gets a decent MPG (around 40 MPG).

My other cars are pretty bad - one does around 10-12 MPG and the other 2 do around 20-25 MPG.

For some reason, I only like environment unfriendly cars :(

dready 03-15-2007 08:39 AM

I have a diesel Jetta that I've been running on bio diesel since I bought it. 45MPG and the bio is good for the car, good for the envirio, and good for farmers.

Peaches 03-15-2007 09:24 AM

I have 2 Jeeps. Not anything even REMOTELY environmentally friendly about them :)

TGPTeam 03-15-2007 09:25 AM

I drive used skoda octavia. pretty friendly for me..

schneemann 03-15-2007 09:27 AM

If a 360CID V-8 powered SUV is your definition of "environmentally friendly" then yes, my vehicle is great on the environment.

Just remember hippies, for every gallon of gas you save, I burn two!

Elli 03-15-2007 10:12 AM

My current car gets 10L/100km

BT 03-15-2007 10:12 AM

no doubt

Good on ya! I wish there were more bio-diesel pumps around here so people would convert a little faster. As it is, the closest one to me is across the border in Point Roberts, WA.

TheDoc 03-15-2007 10:22 AM

Kristin drives a Jetta DTI, does over 40mpg. We got it used from a salesman, who kept the car oddly super clean. Now we have 500k+ miles to go at 42+ mpg and at any point we can modify it to run on alternative fuels.

We test drove the Lexus and new Toyota Hybrid (which sounded like it was going to stall) and some others. We ended with the Jetta for overall best cost, power, gas millage, longevity of the car, and if at some point fuel costs go through roof we can modify the car.

BlackCrayon 03-15-2007 10:27 AM

hell no, i drive an old monte carlo that is too old to get e-tested. but i also drive a 2007 civic so i guess it evens it out a bit.

Slick 03-15-2007 11:23 AM

My vehicles aren't enviromently friendly. I have a Ford Expedition and my toy, a Ford F-350 Harley Davidson Edition quad cab pickup truck :)

TGPTeam 03-15-2007 11:27 AM

drive a prius to be greenpeace friendly

LOL

Evil E 03-15-2007 11:45 AM

Mine is 20 years old, but it's an asian... at least :)
