People how are looking for a custom CMS should realize that they can spend $150/mo for CARMA and hire someone with some smarty knowledge to accomplish whatever they are looking for via CARMA for much less than the cost of creating and maintaining a custom solution.

no offense but why pay $150 a month for that, then have to pay someone to edit shit, when you can outright pay someone to make EXACTLY what you want, and be done?

Also, anyone with good PHP / general programing knowledge who might want to live in the NJ/NY area should contact me. We're hiring techs (nearly always). We provide fantastic benefits and will put together a relocation package.

To create a GOOD custom CMS you're going to pay thousands if not tens of thousands of dollars. Sure, someone could slap something together for a few hundred bucks, but it will be way more headaches than its worth.

After that you have the problems of maintaining it. You have to either be able to track down the original programmer every time you want a change/update/fix or find another programmer to dig though someone else's code which is something programmers absolutely hate.

On the other hand, you could pick up a tested, prepackaged product with 90%+ (maybe even 100%) of what you want already done for $150/mo and then either learn how to configure it with smarty to do what you want, via unlimited support from us or hire someone on an hourly basis to do your initial setup how you want it and use our support for ongoing questions.

I'm a customer of CARMA, and I have really 2 problems with it (which also apply to NATS):

1. Knowledge base / documentation is incomplete. So many times we waste time with trial&error to make something work, only to have to create a ticket for a simple question. Having complete documentation would save us AND you guys time.

2. No change log??? I don't know of many softwares who don't keep a change log and make it available to customers. It'd be great - or should I see necessary - to have a detailed change log so we know what has been changed, added, fixed.

Other than that, I'm very satisfied with Carma, and it is MUCH cheaper at $150/month than I'd pay to get one custom coded. I know this for a fact because prior to CARMA I had 2 different CMS custom coded between 2001 and 2005, and CARMA puts them to shame, at half the cost :D
